Per WSJ, the Trump administration has reversed course and COVID data collection will revert back to the CDC.
(I’m not linking to the WSJ story because it’s paywalled)

Meanwhile in the UK, our government has dissolved Public Health England (The body that runs the NHS) during a pandemic and replaced it with something that will undoubtedly be dreadful. And before they even created the replacement they installed the unqualified wife of a Conservative MP (she's already a member of the House of Lords for some reason) who has been an active campaigner for privatising the NHS for years. Her track record as a CEO is pretty shocking too, overseeing a massive data hack at a communications company that racked up a record fine just for starters.

I read a list of Awful/useless/stupid things our Tory government has done this week and they were up to 80 items by Tuesday. If it were up to me we would very much be at the stage where I would have a dozen or so people dragged into the street and publicly shot (Better yet beheaded) as an example to the other 80 or so I'd want to be on notice.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Oh florida.

Meanwhile, yesterday I finally decided to deal with a persistent but minor breathing issue... told my PCP that I'd used inhaler and advil to no avail, so they sent me to urgent care, who sent me to the ER... everyone in the waiting room sitting gingerly on the edge of their seats. EKGs blood tests, CT scan, and covid test later, they've ruled out the scary things but send me home with instructions to take advil and my inhaler.

The covid test is as unpleasant as they say, but quick. I'm afraid I grabbed the nurse by the arm when it seemed like I was being stabbed in the sinuses.

Heard an interesting stat today. COVID is now the third leading cause of death in the US, after cancer and heart disease. It’s displaced the perennial third-place cause of death, automobile accidents.

In local news...

Public urination tickets fall sharply during pandemic

The biggest drop has been because there’s no Cubs games.

I hadn't heard of those. How much does such a ticket cost?

If they cost ~$100, with thousands of tickets normally, the city could have quite a racket going.

It’s $100-$500, and/or 5-10 days in the slam.

It’s totally a racket, but, assuming you’re not homeless and forced to do it constantly, is it that hard to pee in public without getting caught? I’ve never been caught.

ProTip: don’t look like you’re peeing.

As an aside, when I used to live in a basement, people from the bar down the street would pee on my door all the time. When that happened, banging loudly on the door was always immensely satisfying.

Things like that make me feel it's too late. Like I have to be suspect of any CDC or HHS info, just because there are Trumpettes at the helm now, tampering and who knows what. I feel badly for the good scientists and workers trying to do honest work, to have these spin doctors spreading misinformation and propaganda.

I mean, trump is on tape saying he knows it's real, but his team is still full steam ahead on the misinformation... Why? How? Why ? How?

Why is he getting away with this? How is no one nailing him to the fricking wall?

My impression is that many voters are so far down the rabbit hole that facts don't matter. Elections are a team sport and you're sticking to your team if for no other purpose than to stick it to the Democrats.

There is a share of voters you can reach, and I think Biden is appealing to the sliver of Republican voters that can be reached. While it may not be large, it may very well be what tips the election.

And, down goes Caputo!
Well...He’s taking a 60 day leave of absence “to focus on his health and the well-being of his family” but I think we all can read between those lines. Also, his aide, Paul Alexander, is leaving HHS permanently.

OK, Trump has it. Melania too. Very possibly from Hope Hicks.

No word on Pence test results. He and Trump were photographed meeting (without masks) as recently as Monday.

Nancy Pelosi has been advised to go into isolation. Senator Chuck Grassley should too. In case Trump and Pence both go down.

Things don't look good for the remaining debates. And if Trump ends up in the hospital, he'll have a heck of a time explaining his little flu symptoms.

Hmmmm...This couldn't possibly be a ruse to get the country to trust his buddy Vlad's vaccine, so he can have a vaccine available before the election, could it? Announce you're sick, tell the world you're taking Putin's vaccine, and miraculously recover quickly before November. I mean, in your heart of hearts, you know the guy is totally capable of such thinking, putting americans at risk with an unproven, and largely undocumented, russian vaccine just so he can get reelected.

I'm not proud that this is the first place my thoughts went to when I heard he contracted COVID, but such is the environment the guy has crafted over the past four years.

Trump has ignored every health guideline on this for so long that I don't think we need to unwrap any conspiracy theory. The only miracle is it took this long for him to go down with it. Boris was just as cavalier and he got it almost immediately.
What happens to the election if Trump is not dead but too ill to campaign? Does he call foul and refuse to acknowledge the result or take it as a free pass to his ego when he looses?

^ oy. those people.

It's one way to get out of the debates. Selling HCQ or other snake oil might be a bonus.

They say he can continue to work in quarantine, do you suppose they'll tell us if he gets too sick to function? Pence should be stepping in now. His test was negative, but for how long?

And of course, he doesn't actually need to get Coronavirus to do this. He can just tell everyone he has it and that the vaccine works and he's fine now. Its not like he'd take a risk himself or that lying is beneath him or anything.

Or he might just lie about having it so he can claim it didn't affect him because he's got the best immune system ever or it was hydroxychloroquine or he's chosen by god or the virus is a hoax or all of the above.

Another thought I had: Is this his exit strategy? Health complications so he has to step down and therefore never actually lost the election?

Honestly I hope Karma is just going to do the universe a favour here and put us all out of our misery.

His white house doctor confirmed the diagnosis. So yes, he has it. Pence has tested negative this morning, but it's too soon to be sure. I'd be doing followup tests twice a day for the next week. On everyone in the White House. Also on Biden, Harris, and everyone in close contact with either.

The VP debate is next Wednesday. Suddenly, I'm tempted to watch. It's even possible those two will be the Presidential candidates on the ballot come Election Day.

Sean Conley, his physician, said in a letter that Trump has been given the experimental antibody drug Regeneron, and he has been taking zinc, vitamin D, an antacid, melatonin, and a daily aspirin.
They must have run out of hydroxychloroquine. He had been taking it as a preventative for months.

Moving into a hospital voluntarily, and giving up tweeting... I figure the fear has set in. It's suddenly real. With smallish but double-digit odds of dying.

First Bolsonaro, then Johnson now Trump. Anyone see a pattern?
I hope Trump and his wife recover quickly, but their behavior was quite irresponsible and could impact his election chances. And it could impact the SCOTUS confirmation hearings.

You try not to be the "karma's a bitch" bitch, but when someone has not only held back information from the public, but actively spread disinformation, refusing to wear masks, making it out that only "old people with heart conditions should worry" well...

They weren't ashamed when Herman Cain died (trump at debate: we've had no issues with our rallies) and walked into the Cleveland Clinic and shoo'd away the doctor offering them masks. I heard tonight that Trump arrived too late to the debate to get tested beforehand even.

Trump is a superspreader.

I'm sure CTP would be outraged but Trump has killed a lot of people. If he stays in power he'll kill a lot more. I'd prefer he died instead of them. One life or many (better) lives. Its an ethical no-brainer really.

The word that comes to my mind is reckless, not karma.
He could have reduced the risk to himself and his family by following the recommended protocols — and by forcing those around him to follow them as well. Instead he did the opposite. And Trump reduced his chances, because he won’t be able to hold any rallies for the next two weeks at least. Not to think of the people who have believed his stance on masks and social distancing, his actions have hurt and killed others.

The only way this doesn’t help Trump is if he dies.

Otherwise, watch his approval skyrocket due to sympathy, and then, if he doesn’t get particularly sick, he’ll slam dunk it with a “told you so” once he’s out of it.

Trump is behind in most swing states, and the rust belt. To win, he *has* to turn a bunch of those around within the next month. Now he's off the campaign trail for at least two weeks - half the time to the election. With almost no campaign funds - they've cut his ads to only 3 states at a time to conserve funds.

Biden is sitting on a war chest, and can campaign unopposed for at least two weeks. It seems to me this is the final straw, pushing the election out of Trump's reach.

The Democrats’ strategy is rage.

Trying to rage at a guy in the hospital is bad optics.

That doesn’t make any sense to me. I thought the unexpected SCOTUS nomination was Trump’s last chance, his last chance to focus his election on something other than the pandemic. Now he cannot hold rallies for two weeks or so (provided he doesn’t require any more serious medical care like Boris Johnson did) and even when he returns, Covid-19 is at the forefront. Even when you are sympathetic to his causes, just by asking “How are you and the First Lady doing?” you veer the attention to the pandemic.

We must have been watching different elections. To me Biden’s strategy is to be the safe choice, a person with empathy, plenty of experience, someone who remains calm. The most aggressive ads IMHO are run by former Republican/anti-Trump conservatives, e. g. the Lincoln project.

Trump doesn’t need rallies. His health has just commandeered the media zeitgeist for the next 14 days. At least.

If it’s not apparent how rage towards Trump factors heavily into the Democrats’ campaign strategy, I don’t know what to say.

Go to all your left wing friends and tell them, “you know, I’m just not really all that angry at Trump”.

Compare and contrast with “you know, I’m just not really all that enthusiastic about Biden”.

Anger and rage are two different things. Rage is blind whereas anger doesn’t need to be.

Regarding Trump’s commandeering of the media, under normal circumstances Trump is good at deflecting medical a attention from one topic to another. But these aren’t normal circumstances. Any mention of COVID is IMHO a net negative, based on his actual record with an immediate impact to a large share of the American population, including the sliver of persuadable voters. Trump cannot steer the discussion away from COVID in the next two weeks.

Now they can point to his personal stance on Covid being ignorant and wrong and therefore his approach really is responsible for 200k deaths. You don't need rage or anger to spin that. Though it ought to make people angry. I'm guessing more than a few of those 200k were Trump voters with Trump voting families.

Does anyone think the new Borat movie might affect the election?
