It's a lot like Studio Pro but with a few new things like this interesting grey interface called "Dashboards" (but I can't find better images):

Sure might make a cool dark theme.

Also check out all the apps and the site design, there are some cool color schemes that might make for some cool Studio Pro variations, swiz?

Dashboards looks pretty nice! Kinda like a greyscale digital device. Joe Kohlmann, where are you?

It really is a beautiful interface. I wish Apple would give Xcode that "Pro-makeover" that the rest of the pro-apps have received.

oh, schweeet!

Apple keeps killing off my Adobe apps one by one.

Final Cut replaced Premiere

Motion very well may replace After Effects

... now we just need an Apple Photoshop-type app.

Yah. I was just talking to Adam Betts, and he's worried that Adobe might pull out. But we think that if it comes to that, Apple would make a better Photoshop

Wouldn't put it past Apple having a "Photoshop" in the works, but Apple seems to be sticking to video editing. Personally I hope Adobe doesn't pull out, it would be bad for Apple's roll as Mac being the chose OS for design unless an Apple design suite really is a killer app like the Apple video apps are.

Yeah, but Apple seems to enjoy mocking huge apps that have monopolized the industry for a decade with a 1.0 that is much better. Think Keynote, if you want to go past video editing. How could an app developed over a year be such a better experience than an application at version 10 after a decade?

I just thought of posting this thread.. but it was already here!

Please, someone make it, it would be nice, i think.

I don't think Motion can uproot After Effects, it is already too much of a staple. Final Cut Pro was able to come in and become a huge standard because there was no other video editor for DV that was that good.

True, Motion at version 1 can't compare to AE, or Combustion, it lacks quite a number of very imporant features (tracker, decent colour correction tools), but for what it's intebded market is, it'l be a nice app. and provide a nice twist on GUI inrteraction.

I'm no video pro, but doesn't FCP already have color correction built in?

It does, but it's not really geared towards major compositing, it has some compositing tools, but again, it's not really a replacement for a dedicated compositor. I guess this is where Motion might come in, but probably in later revisions. Motion seems to be an exercise in productivity over substance, which is a good thing for the future, but at the end ofthe day, the compositor needs the right tools for those specific tasks that film, and video production brings along.

wow off topic now! So any ideas for themes come to mind when looking at this? I like the colors used on the site, and I'm sure would make for a cool Studio Pro update or maybe new theme.

If anyone finds any better screens of the Dashboards please post them.

Aren't the motion 'Dashboards' transparent like the volume bezels?

I would love to see the used more throughout the entire OS. Just about every palette in my opinion could inherit a lot from this concept..

...along with being 'tab-able' like the new InDesign CS or buddy pop.

I think the effect would do a very good job of giving the UI a more 'open-aired' feeling.

Sorry... didn't mean to go OT....

They are transparent, but hay you can't always get what you want, an opaque theme based on the Dashboards would be really cool still.

Let's wait and see what Swiz thinks when he's back from vacation...

He's the expert so far at turning Apple "pro" UIs into themes. That one would be a nice addition to his portfolio

Just thought I'd remind everyone that motion has been released now. There must be a Motion GFX designer here with a really beefy G5 and Gfx Card who could let Swiz borrow it for a while

Sorry to stray back off topic but someone mentioned compositing - isn't that what Shake has won Oscars for?

Anyhoo, the new Dashboard interface is very sleek, looks even better in action all transparent and gorgeous!

Shake is a high end compositing engine for film whereas this is targeted towards standard and HD video and is more like After Effects with the titling and layers.

It's called feature creep. It can totally ruin your intended flow for a UI. For every major release, developers should sit down with UI designers and analysts to figure out which features should be added, where they should appear and decide whether to redo the UI from scratch to fit it all in there.

That approach might add a bit of a learning curve for every new version but you would gain a less cluttered UI.

Developing a Motion-esque theme would be awesome. I'm slowly getting into theming, maybe I'll give it a go over the weekend.

Looks like a good start. A bit darker than the screens, but until you can find better you did good. You need to do the glyphs in the widgets, like the X to close the window etc, that's one of the things that looked really cool to me.

Oh maybe you could ask around in the software forum, or even the Apple.com motion forum for some screens?

Looks good. The white in the scrollbar background could really stand out though, and the widgets should be bigger with the X in etc. Nice work though!

yeah I don't like these scrollbars anyway..
And I'm so used to small widgets that bigger ones look weird too me
NS: if you think that the colors are darker that means that my color manager on photoshop is not right..
I agree about the glyphs..I should put them
I'll see if I can get some screenshots..and keep your eyes open too
btw, if you want to work on the mockup, feel free to do so..

I'll be honest. modo's interface makes me want to be sick with boredom. motion is much cooler - inspired me to try a chalkboard theme actually. Way more possibilities here than the bland puke-grey thing (although I imagine a modo theme looking better than modo itself given the skills in here)

Motion's interface is basically like FCP and other Apple Pro apps, except for the dashbaord. In which case, the dashboard is the only new thing in it, GUI wise.

Anyway, I've got Motion, and tried modo, no contest as to what has the nicer interface, modo, IMO.

That is far from what this theme should be, take a closer look at the screenshot in NS's first post. If its not going to look at least VERY close to the GUI from Apple, it shouldnt be considered as such.
