No kidding — when I was a kid, our house was nestled against a small bayou, which housed an alligator we decided to name George. He grew to about 8-feet during the time we lived there.

Driver: Brake Line Cut For Parking In ‘Dibs’ Space « CBS Chicago

For those not familiar, "dibs" is your spurious claim to the parking spot you dug out.

It's usually represented by some piece of trash being put in the parking spot. A broken chair... maybe two broken chairs with a mop handle laid across.

The usual penalties for parking in someone's dibs spot are keying, and icing (hose down the car in sub-freezing temperatures).

Cutting the brake line is a new one.


P.S. Not sure I buy this story, buts that's not exactly stopping me from posting it.

I live with similar rules: street parking and huge snowstorms. Park in front of my house after I've spent 90 minutes shovelling out my spot and you may need some cosmetic touch-ups.

I always wanted to start a thread about the dibs practice. It's absolute BS. Its public parking. Whoever did the shoveling is meaningless. You're not digging out your car so you have a parking space. You're digging out your car so you can leave.

I'm almost certainly talking about less-busy spots than you guys are - small city, etc. etc. - but in our downtown, the very unofficial rule is that if you shovel the spot in front of your house, you should expect to be able to park in it long-term. (I.e. during the evenings & overnight...temporary parking is usually okay with everyone...many people just leave a note on their cars saying "back in an hour", etc.). We have mostly townhouse-style houses, and everyone gets a parking permit roughly for your geographic area. Most of the problem starts when someone takes a someone's spot...then they have to park somewhere else, and a chaotic chain reaction begins.

I am totally in agreement with dibs practice. We just had a storm and got 18 inches of snow with high winds - myself and a couple neighbours spent over 3 solid hours shovelling out in front of our respective houses last night and this morning. If you want to come and park on our street, you're more than willing to take an available spot - just bring your shovel and clear one out. Otherwise, there is lots of paid parking available in the neighbourhood - you're paying the property manager a reasonable fee to keep it well-shovelled.

Your use of "entitlement" connotates claiming a right that isn't earned. I'm fully aware that I don't have a legal right to exclusive parking in my spot - but I take the position that my 3 hours of shovelling and the impassable 3-foot plow banks to either side, courtesy of my lazy/non-driving neighbours, mean that I fully earned the right to park there most of the time - not a legal right, just a "let's be reasonable people here" right.

And if have little enough shame to park your expensive vehicle in an immaculately shovelled spot in front of someone else's house, and get out and walk away thanking your lucky stars that you found a free spot......you fully deserve any negative karma that might come your way, my friend.

PS: I agree with Shortcut though. If you shovel the spot you should get "dibs". If it's shoveled by the city then it should be "first come first served".

Public street, no permits, you don't park 'in front' of your house, just wherever you can (which often times can be in front of your house) and people who work or shop nearby park on the street during the day. No dibs.

Yeah like I said I figured circumstances were different....but technically anyone with a permit can park - so the guy two streets over can avoid shovelling a spot and park in yours instead. So somewhat similar

I admit permit is different, (I also imagine a pure residential area is different).

I mean, nine months a year cars will suddenly show up on your street because it's street sweeping the next day and they can't park on theirs.

The scenario he mentioned was shoveling out the space in front of one's on house. Again, keep in mind I don't live in a major urban area. Where I come from even though the street is "technically" public ... to park in front of someone's house in a residential area is a major faux pas.

Little less total snowfall here than Boston, but it's still insane. This past weekend we saw our 3rd blizzard since late January and it's snowing pretty good again as I'm typing this. The MBTA has ground to a spectacular halt and snow-removal systems state-wide are vastly outmatched.

Here on the coast last night it was -3ºF with the wind absolutely howling.
