Just got wife new MacBook (white) 2GB / OS X 10.5.6

Transferred over all settings & data from HD of Panther iBook.

Everything smoothe except Mail: inbox and all other mailboxes EMPTY (as if nothing came over from ibook).
Settings for her .mac account look fine in Preferences for Mail (lists @mac.com and @me.com as addresses; account is "active").
But I can't even send an email from [email protected] to [email protected] => The activity window *contends* that it is moving the email to outbox. ...for minutes. Meanwhile: it'll let me compose another (unsendable) email, but Mail cannot be Quit (must be Force-Quit.

I sure was looking forward to wifey working on Leopard... but now to discover that Mail won't work/import/check mail?
Oh, and "Rebuild" is greyed when inbox is selected and does NOTHING when another box is selected.

Any got any suggestions?

UPDATE:
Well, I can't believe such things still work, but: "Trash the preferences"
So I trashed the mail .plist and... Mail now works
[ though i can't understand why Apple's "import old settings" can't copy these right ]

But her old "On My Mac" folders *appear* (in Mail) to be empty. But in the Library, there is a "mbox" of many MB in size that (when opened as a text file) seems to be the CONTENT of mail.
Can anyone guess how to get Mail to rebuild (or some such)? "Rebuild" for any such mail box still seems to cause NO cpu activity (nor accomplish anything).

NEVUH MIND...
The Leopard Mail has a menu item under File...
And there is an option to import... mbox files.
All her various folders got put inside a non "On my Mac" folder called Import.
Hope this helps somebody else.
