Over the weekend, my wife got around to setting-up her iPhone to do iCloud backups. This included purchasing more iCloud storage (200GB). She started her initial backup yesterday afternoon. An hour later, the phone was showing the backup was going to take nine hours. WTF??? She cancelled the backup and decided to try later.

That night, she started the backup again, and just left it running overnight. This morning, the phone was indicating the backup was going to take one day. Obviously, she cancelled the backup.

What might be going on here? What is hampering the backup?

FWIW, her phone is a 6s (iOS 14.8), and roughly 100 of her 128GB of storage is full.

The feedback I’ve gotten elsewhere seems to confirm that ultra-long uploads for first backups are to be expected, especially when shoving 100GB into the cloud. Oh well.

If she has to interrupt the backup (leaving the home wifi and driving to her office, for instance) will the backup resume automagically when she gets back into wifi (like, at her office)?

Resume? Yes. But expect it to take more time after resuming to verify previous, restart, etc.

Well, the backup finally completed around 5:30 this morning. All seems well.
