Lots of software is 'free' - but few are allowed to be 'freely distributed'.
Read the license agreement before you copy that copyrighted 10.1 update.

It's not in Apple's best interest to have to support software updates that may have come from 'dubious' sources. They can only maintain the integrity of the update data when they have control over the distribution.
Yeah, it's free - but that doesn't mean you can duplicate it.
You can share the disk - but I bet you're not allowed to copy and distribute it.
