Can I use both a NVidea 8800 GT and a ATI 2600 XT in a Mac Pro?

I have one of the new Mac Pro's which has a ATI 2600 XT video card and for adding a 2nd video card I'm interested in knowing if I can add a NVidea 8800GT. I will be eventually running 3 monitors off of this computer. Would this setup work?

Note that multiple-display support is also application specific, so if you have major apps that you intend to run on multiple displays you should ask this same question in individual app forums.

Yes.
The no-mixing-video-card-brands rule only applied to the 2006 Mac Pros for a short period after launch until Apple got the OS/drivers figured out.

They will both work fine.
Just make sure you install the graphics cards in the PCI 2.0 16-lane slots for best performance. Those slots are labeled with SLOT 1 (the double-wide slot) and SLOT 2. See also page 60 in your MP user's guide.

I don't have work today, so last night I was kinda bored and decided to play (which with me can be dangerous). In my 2006 Mac Pro I have a new ATI Radeon HD 2600XT (yes, works) installed in the 16x PCIe slot. I re-installed the stock nVidia GeForce 7300GT in to the topmost PCIe slot (8x) and attached two Dell 2001FP displays that I have that aren't being used (from a PC I retired last year).
So as of now, I'm running a 24" 1920x1200 LG246 as the main screen off the Radeon 2600XT and two 20" 1600x1200 2001FPs off the GeForce 7300, one on either side of the main wide screen.
Also, since the 24" LG has only one DVI input (HDMI, actually), its connected to a DVI switch box. The second port on the switch box can connect to my MacBook, so I can dock my laptop to the big screen when necessary (you can see the cable in the picture below).
Overkill yes, but fun nonetheless.

I just purchase a Mac Pro with the ATI card, but would prefer to get the 8800GT. Hopefully this is the correct forum for my newbie questions.
Can anyone recommend a non-Apple supplied card?
Will the EVGA 512-P3-N802-AR (or N801) work?
Is the Nvidia driver already installed on my Mac Pro out of the box?
Should I purchase a 9600GT card, or is that not supported?

No, no, yes, no.
You're going to buy Apple's card (through them or a Mac oriented third party) and you're going to like it.
