I'm using a MacBook Pro with a built-in iSight running 10.4.7. Last night I suddenly noticed the video scan icon wasn't appearing in DL. I then tried enabling the camera in iChat and got a message that the iSight is being used by another application. After rebooting I still have the same problem. The light on the iSight is off and there don't seem to be any unusual processes running. Any ideas?

Here's the process list & KEXT list:

Try creating a new user account and see if the iSight is usable from there. If it's a user-level problem, you probably have something running amok you can look for more closely. If it's machine level, it might be something wrong with the iSight and a visit to the Genius Bar is in order.

Shutting down & zapping PRAM rather than restarting fixed the problem. Logging into another account had no effect.

Crazy. That's the second time I've heard about this PRAM zapping this week. Could it be crazy voodoo cures are making a comeback? What's next, fixing permissions?!

;^)

Somewhere else I saw a reference to this occurring after running Leopard preview, which is probably the reason it happened for me. I installed it on an external drive the day I got it at WWDC and booted it twice for about 5 minutes before going back to 10.4.

when i bought my iSight, i had the same message at you, in every single iSight-aware application. turns out it was my Miglia AlchemyTV card. fortunately Miglia had a patch that fixed the problem. you might want to see what iSight-aware programs could be running in the background.
