Crucial.

and to add memory to the G5 it must be done in matching pairs, so unless you're going to buy 2 1GB DIMMS...

Ram runs at a certain speed*, and one company's ram will not outperform another's.

*Specific to Macs, where you cannot adjust memory timings.

what is said above is correct. There is High Performance ram out there with better CAS Latency etc. and that is more tolerant to overclocking but this is useless in the Mac world. In fact, The G5 will not boot with RAM sticks with a CAS latency below 3.

The reasons to go with crucial is that they have a very good lifetime warranty (had them replace 2 sticks for me no questions asked) and I believe they supply Apple with the RAM they use.

PNY should work however buying RAM from a store tends to be more expensive then just ordering from Crucial (which has free 2nd day air).

I think the 2x512 from crucial is 198.98 or so....

Does cheap memory affect how crash prone a computer is? I the Dual 2Ghz G5 in Oct., and everything is three times as unstable as my 400 Mhz G4. On the G5, programs crash often and I get the "Restart your Mac" screen every now and then; on the G4, I've only had the restart screen twice for the 3 years I've run OSX.

The only difference I can think of is that I got the cheapest RAM I could find for my G5. Might that make my G5 unstable?

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for the reply. I picked up 2 512 sticks of PNY so far so good..

One question to all

When i got the dual 1.8 i had 2 more 256 sticks added to have a total of 1gig. when i goto about this mac then to memory it shows the 4 256s as pc3200U-30330
and the 2 512 sticks of PNY as PC3200-25330

anyone know the difference? of 30330 v 25330 ?

thanks

I was going to be a smart arse and say "5000" but decided against it.

It might just be some reference string or code or whatever they call it. Wouldn't think it's anything to be concerned about.

Do you think that this is a volitole setup:

Slot 1: 256 DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330 (APPLE SUPPLIED)
Slot 2: 256 DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330 (APPLE SUPPLIED)
Slot 3: 512 DDR SDRAM PC3200U-25330
Slot 4: 512 DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30440

Ehh?

I don't know why slot 4 is different to slot 3 but if you're having problems maybe that's why.

At first I thought it was the CAS latency rating of the memory. You often see memory listed as 3-3-3, also referred to as CL3, or 2-2-2, referred to as CL2 which is faster memory. You also see 2.5-3-3, or 2.5-3-2.5 or some other version of this sometimes. The G5 needs CL3 rated memory, supposedly it does not work, or is buggy with anything faster. So maybe the first 2 sticks are 3-3-3 and the third is 2.5-3-3. But I have no idea what the fourth one is. I'd say run it, and if you seem to have errors or crashes for no other explainable reason, try swithing the non-CL3 sticks to normal CL3. Sell the others on eBay, they are probably not bad memory, just not good with a G5. Of course, if everything seems to run fine. Woohoo, you've got a great machine with lot's O' RAM.
