This is by no means a complete list, but I did cover most major genres. If I left something out, then share it in your post (feel free to include remarks about how tasteless I am for not including it on the main list).

I allowed for multiple choices, but if you choose more than one genre, then please post the order of your favorite styles. Also specify whether you prefer metal to the others in its selection (rock/metal/punk).

A lot of this will depend on age, background, region, etcetera, but I was just hoping to get a feel for what kinds of music people prefer here. The iTunes (Last.fm) thread scratches the surface, but this gives a more generalized view.

I voted Rock/Metal and Alt. Rock.

I lean more towards Prog rock, which you tastelessly excluded.

When I was young, I listened to nothing but Metal and Rock, but with just barely a few more years on me, I've gone in a much different direction...

1. Alternative - I think this title is a catch-all for a lot of different bands that I like. A lot of the Christian groups that I listen to can be put under this or Rock, but lean towards Alternative.
2. Rock - More on the Coldplay side of things, which isn't really "Rock," I guess.
3. Blues - SRV, Jonny Lang, Buddy Guy, Mayer's Trio material...I love it more and more.
4. Jazz / Big Band - Love me some Sinatra, Connick Jr., Buble, Krall, etc.
5. Folk - Mellow with (usually) great lyrics. Plus, acoustic guitars are always nice.

I don't have any one favorite, in no particular order I like.
Rock/Metal/ (but not) Punk
Blues
Pop
Alternative
Oldies

I'm not a huge country fan except for Johnny Cash and Faith Hill and I've been known to listen to classical. I suppose I selected Oldies because I'm was assuming that included "Classic Rock" and as a kid I listened to that. But then it was new rock and not classic rock at the time

I voted:

Rock/Metal/Punk
Rap/R&B
Pop
Techno/Dance/Electronica
Alternative
Oldies

Sometimes in that order, sometimes not. My tastes in music vary widely. One week I'll be listening to Owl City and the next week it's Inhale Exhale or Sullivan. I think my favorite type of music is music I haven't gotten tired of yet.

Classical, Romantic, Baroque, Medieval or Modernist?

Classical were the "newies" at one point.

(I really despise the term "Oldies" because it means absolutely NOTHING. "Oldies" used to be Smokey, Fred Astaire, Don McLean, Sinatra, Fats Domino, Bill Haley, Elvis and the Beach Boys. And ABBA. And basically anything of any genre, as long as it's older than about fifteen or twenty years, depending on perspective.

I recently saw an album from 1993 genre-tagged as "Oldies". Idiotic term.)

I'm kind of surprised so far as to how many votes Jazz / Big Band has received so far. I figured it would fall behind pretty quickly.

The lack of votes for Country / Bluegrass is predictable though. The only modern country artists that I like are Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.

I used to be very much only into rock. Lately I've been listening to 'classical'. A lot of Rossini and Mussorgsky in the past few weeks (so romantic, really, not classical). I've become a huge fan of Cecilia Bartoli (mezzo-soprano opera singer, her rendition of L'orphelene du Tyrol is phenomenal). Otherwise I tend to listen to mostly blues, reggae, and country anymore.

I screwed up. I voted "other" instead of reading further where you included Christian music under those genres.

I have been mostly listening to music by publicly know Christian artists. Groups like Jars of Clay, Robbie Seay Band, Casting Crowns, Third Day. So mostly rock/alt.rock stuff.

Phil Wickham, Leeland, and Brooke Fraser are three of my favorites right now. I'm always looking for good worship bands, but these guys are getting the most plays currently.

Competitive sports tend to bring out a ton of regular guys, but also a select handful of ultra-competitive jerks with no visible redeeming qualities whatsoever. That's why I stopped playing basketball; too many of them were coming to play at our weekly basketball night.

Apparently people need more exposure to Bluegrass.

If you live in the Boston area go to Cantab Lounge in Central Square on a Tuesday night and prepare to be blown away buy guys with banjos (and guitars, and dobros, and fiddles, &c.).

  1. Rock/metal/punk, meaning mostly post-rock, prog-rock, indie rock, that kind of stuff [Sigur Rós, Muse, Dikta, GY!BE, Nirvana (okay, that’s grunge), etc.]. Not really into punk much.
  2. Folk. Not hicktown country folk, but actual folk music, music with a history, especially Celtic [Clannad, Ceredwen, Altan, etc.], or Nordic [Gåte, Eivør Pálsdóttir, Värttinä, Sorten Muld, etc.]
  3. Alternative, meaning all kinds of oddball stuff that I don’t know where else to put [múm, Mike Oldfield, etc.]

It’s odd, ’cause apart from Fred Astaire and perhaps Fats Domino, I wouldn’t call any of those ‘oldies’. Interesting, since I’m of the younger generation where’d you’d logically expect ‘oldie’ to have come to mean less, not more.

I grew up listening to the local "oldies" station, which was typically music from the late '50s, the '60s, and early '70s.

Hey, hicktown folk has more redeeming qualities to it than you might imagine. See stuff like "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash, for example.

Oh, I should clarify—I don’t actually know much American hicktown folk music. What I was mostly referring to was Danish hicktown folk music (which is very similar to really, really bad Austrian schlagers).

No, I’ve heard of all of them (though I will admit I didn’t know Fred Astaire as anything other than a dancing actor). But to me, ‘oldies’ means Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, etc. Fats Domingo and Bill Haley (and I guess early Sinatra, too) are sort on the border of what I’d think of as an oldie. Elvis and the Beach Boys are sort of in-between. I’d still consider Don McLean, Smokie, and (especially) ABBA to be fairly recent music, most definitely not ‘oldies’.

mmmh. halibut.

See, though? that's what I mean. Billie, Bessie, Glenn Miller are jazz, blues, and jazz, respectively.

Robert Johnson isn't "oldies" to anybody I've met.

In most usage, "Oldies" seems to be sort of a catch-all for anything Top 40 you're too young to remember or that you're simply ignorant about and can thus not sort into a "proper" genre. (Not "you", personally, mind.)

Same here (pretty much), except add metal to the list, especially death metal. Hate the stuff, even though I loved it back in the day.

I like some (sometimes a lot) of all of the choices, so I said "Other." I particularly like big band stuff and a lot of jazz, but classical is great too. It all depends on the artist and the piece.

As part of my minor, I had to take a number of "broadening" courses, including "Appreciation of Music." Best non-core class I ever took! The prof had actually played with some of the big big bands, and was able to get across what "jazz" really was, along with why it's important to listen to music at the proper volume (which is "too loud for the class next door," by the way ). We listened to everything from Gregorian chants to what was on the radio right then, and it was great!
