I have my own "main folder", on an external drive. When I open any random folder on it and then enter time machine, TM just goes to user, name folder -- and that is the Mac OS drive? Any ideas on what is going on? That folder is not excluded.

Are you sure the external drive is being backed up on the TM drive? You can check by just going to your TM drive in the Finder, not in the TM interface, and look for a folder with the name of the external drive.

thanks Steve, just says Jeff imac. No name of any hardrive. no Mac HD or external name. So not sure what is going on. Probably confusion as I don't back up everything, but maybe I should at some point buy a hugemongeous HD to do that....

Fine Q steve, (you can change title of thread if you want), If my Mac HD is 1 GB, though contents just 100 GB or so, my main external for documents is 3 TB, and about 2.5 is filled up. You want your TM external to be? Thanks.
