how do i delete classic. when i drag it to the trash says its a root folder and i cant,,,

There are a couple of different ways to delete the OS 9 System Folder. One is to log out, then log back in as root. Then you can drag and drop the System Folder to the trash.
The other way to do this is through the Terminal. Launch Terminal. Type the following commands:
1. cd / [return] This will take you to the root directory of your HD.
2. ls, or ls -al [return] This will give you a listing of the folders. You want System Folder.
3. sudo rm -R "System Folder" [return] At this point you will be promted for a password. Type your password and hit Return and OS 9 will be gone. When you are finished type "exit [return]" to get out of the Terminal window.
You can now also delete the "Applications (Mac OS 9)" folder as well.

is it completely safe to do this (as in, there won't be boot problems or errors b/c OSX is looking for OS9)?

Should be fine.
Just be ABSOLUTELY SURE you use the quotes around "System Folder"
If you screw things up and just type system, you are dead.
I tried to use the space escape and screwed it up and deleted my OS X system folder by accident... THAT was a reinstall... good thing it was a brand new machine

As long as you don't try to launch Classic you won't have any trouble. But even if you do launch Classic by mistake you'll just get an error that tells you it can't find an OS 9 system folder is all. No worries.
There will be no issues with OS X booting up. I've been running what I call OS 9 free since 10.1 came out.
