Won't say where I got this just yet. But I will say I know if it's fake or real. What do you think?

it's probably fake. But it's probably close to what the box will be like. Who cares?

Who cares indeed!? Truth is, I was bored and I had the image. I saw a similar earlier post and it seemed people around here liked to speculate on these kinds of things. So, if you're bored enough for some idle speculation... guess away!

Fake. The 'X' logo doesn't match the perspective of the box.

Fake? Probably, but it's by far the best i've seen so far. I like the way the fur on the X extends off the letter (if that makes any sense).

Ok, so you're a graphic designer. I'm assuming that you made this picture, and if you did, PLEASE make a wallpaper! Plus, email me because I'm interested in creating a theme out of this.

I'm more interested in knowing how you simulated that fur! Looks super! Is that a pattern of some sort, a masked photograph, or a simulated texture done in photoshop?

Well clearly I fooled no one. As all you perceptive people figured out, it is a fake and was done by me as an experiment of sorts. Those of you who noticed some perspective problems were right... I spent quite a while on making the fur look right and got lazy when it came time to throw everything in perspective. To those of you who appreciated the work, thanks. It was done entirely in Photoshop (the original box was actually a product shot of Keynote downloaded from the Apple PR site). The fur took some doing, but I can explain in to those who are interested. In the meantime, for those who wanted a desktop picture - I made one. Feel free to grab it at http://toomuchtea.com/MacNN/panther_...sktop_1024.jpg Bigger versions can be made upon request.
Best,
Eric

Can you make a version with darker hair, and without the X in it? Also, if the whole desktop was generally made of finder hair like in the X, that would be nice too. I'm sorry if I'm causing you too much trouble, but this looks really great!

Nah - this is the actual artwork: Here
they've gone for an old-school Unix theme.

Yes, I am very interested in learning how you did the fur... Are you going to post it here? Or do you want to email how you did it?
Thanks!

I think that it's nasty looking, in a way... as though it were something pulled out of Buckwheat's hair.

That looks very basic and boring. Apple would surely make the box more colourful and inviting. I'm still hoping that they'll use a Pink Panther theme.

For those of you who requested tips on how to make faux fur in Photoshop (hey, that's aliteration!), I've posted a little QuickTime movie tutorial. There's no sound because Snapz Pro doesn't seem to being recognizing my USB mic. However, you should be able to get an idea of how it works. You'll note in the end, I use the clone tool... however, due to the video compression, it's not clear what I'm doing with it. The answer is that the Wave filter leaves some rough borders and I'm using the clone tool and a soft brush to smooth them out.
http://toomuchtea.com/MacNN/Fur_Tutorial_1.mov
When I get a moment I'll do a new video showing how to composite the fur with an object (such as a giant "X") and a quick way to create the little stray hairs jutting out.
Enjoy!

I think the box looks great... I guess I'm tired of the "kid" styled box and would like to see something a little more ferocious looking. The Jaguar box is cool, but it still looks like a toy...
I would love to see the pink panther style box... that would be hilarious!!!

Nifty tutorial, thanks!
Just in case you decide you want to pull a fast one in the future, the two things that gave away the fake to me had nothing to do with perspective; the most glaring thing is that Apple always uses a lighting direction of 90 straight down... your light seems to be coming almost completely from the left. Secondly, at least where the last box was concerned, Apple left some space between "version 10.2" and "Jaguar" (there may even have been some punctuation in between; I can't tell from the images of the box on the Internet, and I got Jag with my computer). I can't wait to see the tutorial on wrapping that fur around a shape.

You sir, are right. Do you have stairs in your house?

Nice work, if you actually did change the prospective a bit it could have fooled some people, but its just that something like that is so easy to fake most people would guess it would be even if it was real.
Nice work, I like the fur.
