According to Think Secret, the Tiger GM has made it to the usual nefarious places on the net. Please don't mention such places here or you'll get the thread locked.

I'm just curious how many people are too impatient to wait 10 days and will actually expend the effort to install it in the next couple of days.

kman

BTW, if you do want it early make sure you get the one without the debug code. I'm sure it is clearly labeled.

I'd never bother, as I'll have a copy fairly soon on my doorstep, but it's not like we should be surprised that it's been leaked.

10 days is a long time when you want it NOW!

still - people better have bought it prior to downloading
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

People who download and install it take the risk of erasing hard drive. You have to give permission to install which gives total control to "who knows who"!

I can't see myself ever pirated system software. I honestly can't see myself pirating software at all, but the one thing you should be SURE about is the OS core... and when people download and install stuff like that blindly, it amazes me.

With all the attention Apple has been putting toward piracy lately - I wouldn't be suprised if they put some tracking mechansim in a copy just to see who downloads it.

Well had I been at home I might have, but as I'm at University downloading via Bittorrent would get me kicked off the network.

It's interesting to note that it's turned up on a Chinese tracker, as the traditional channels are staying well clear of it.

I'm kind of tempted, even though I already have it ordered. I'd really love to get to work on some Dasboard widget ideas that I'd like to release to the public.

But seriously, I'd rather not have to go through the effort of finding it, and then maintaining a good share ratio.

For 350MB TV show rips, fine. But for multi-GB DVD images? I'll wait 10 days, thank you very much. I'd rather save the DVD-R I'd need to burn it on to back up my data before actuallly upgrading.

I'd download it if they had the CD images and not a DVD image. Sucks I gotta buy it then mail in/wait to get the CDs. Too bad it doesn't look like they are gonna sell the CD editions in the store.

Open Step, do you know anyone with a Mac and DVD drive? You could launch your Mac in Target mode if you have a Firewire cable and another Mac.

Closer to instant gratification while you wait for your CDs. Anyway, I've already paid and I'm looking forward to having it show up in the mail

At one forum, two people who had installed the supposed Tiger GM were not pleased. Both agreed that Spotlight sucked: CPU-intensive and not very accurate. They said that Quicksilver was way more effective and efficient. They hated the new Mail.app interface and complained about UI discrepancies. Safari RSS was meh. They found a crashing bug while installing Dashboard widgets.

I didn't even think of this, splendid idea. We'll be getting the family pack and rather than waiting for the CDs to arrive I can use my Dad's G4 to install tiger onto my iBook 500 w/CDROM.

You might think I'm nuts for wanting to put tiger onto a 500Mhz G3 but with each successive upgrade its getting more usable.

Oh and we'll be putting it on a pismo as well

actually, they did - without a mean intend, but afaik - using widgets like the temperature thing directly queries the apple server ... looks kinda odd if the "final" service is used 10 days b4 release day, wouldn't it

We have licenses for our entire workgroup, and for OS X Server. We don't expect the CDs to arrive until weeks or even a month later. (campus site licenses, and a damn slow university)

Is there anything illegal about downloading it to avoid the wait? (of course I mean only downloading and installing after the release)

theoretically no, if you have in fact paid for tiger licenses on all the machines you plan to install it on

We've paid of course, for every machine in the group. As I said, it's a combination of site licenses, and the Mac OS X Server update program (or whatever it is). I think we'll wait on the Server stuff though, there are bound to be bugs, and it would be nice to have a smooth transition. We're big Mac fans, and are all dying to play with this new OS.

What wait would you be avoiding if you waited until after it was released?

To clarify, our license for desktop Tiger is a site license through our University. Distribution of the CDs after the University gets the CDs is slow, and there are other factors. In any case, it's a few weeks to a month after the release of Tiger before we will be seeing our copies of Tiger even though we are entitled to it on release day.

Edit: In any case, the legality seems to fuzzy to me, I think it's just better to wait for the discs.

Anecdotal evidence - it's just like real evidence only it isn't!

If you want more opinions however, here's mine:

Spotlight rules (it does not use CPU while not indexing, which it does exactly once). The computer is faster / has a faster feel to it. The new mail is worlds better than the one in Panther. Most everything is stable and I haven't had a problem with widgets either from Apple or from third parties.
