None of which is made in Germany. They're from Belgium.

If your grandfather likes hoppy Pilseners I suggest Jever from Northern Germany.

It was my understanding that trappist beers were all from Belgium (lucky bastards!)

One of my favourites is Schoefferhofer Hefeweizen, though I have always been partial to my wheat beers.

EDIT: I knew I shouldn't have checked my spelling of Schoefferhofer :grrr:

I like Schumacher Alt (Website with sound) a lot, but haven't seen them anywhere outside the Düsseldorfer region.

I realize that the Trappist beers are traditionally from Belgium. But I doubt anything magical happens when they cross the border. If they taste good in Belgium, they probably will in Germany too, unless skunked of course. ;-)

I threw Schoefferhofer Hefeweizen into Google, it asked me if I meant "Scheffauerhof Hefeweizen", I said yes, there weren't any results.

Watch out with Hefe Weizen, Y3a, it tends to ferment in one's stomach, or something, sort of causing a delayed "drunken than I thought I was" effect after a few hours.

The best beer in Germany is the one posted by Kronos - Rothaus Tannenzäpfle, by the Rothaus brewery.

Well, actually, Waldhaus is supposedly even better, but I have been completely unable to procure any here in Hamburg.
