Gates and Jobs get set for historic tete-a-tete - MarketWatch

This happens next Wednesday. Any speculation on how it will go?

It'll be very polite. Jobs will be finely polished and in a black turtleneck; Gates, in comparison, will look like he just got out of bed, wearing a plaid shirt. Jobs will wipe the floor with Gates. But, none of it will matter to anyone but the people who are already convinced to buy Apple.

It will probably go over pretty well, they've done stuff like this before (very rarely but they've been seen together).

I'm sure it'll be very civil, and both will talk mostly about computing and entertainment in general. I doubt there will be any bickering about operating systems.

Actually, I can't think of anything they'd actually disagree about. Both have the same talking points of new ways to consume media, and new ways to explore your digital lifestyle®.

Uh... When?

Although Gates made a famous phone call to Jobs in 1997 and the two briefly shared a stage at a 1983 Apple event, the two industry icons have never had a public conversation.

I think they took this picture right after their first date... several months before they broke up.

3) Meeting at a large dinner, most likely one organized for industry leaders, is not at all in the same ballpark as a public conversation.

Haha! Wylie and Hall, my bad. I thought Gates looked a little funny. So-to-speak.

The older picture (the real one) was taken for an interview done for Fortune magazine in 1991. JOBS AND GATES TOGETHER The boy wonders of computing, now thirtysomething, argue over where innovation comes from and where PCs will go. - August 26, 1991 A bit more than a pose for a picture, wouldn't you say.

They obviously did more than "meet" at that dinner. In that picture they're having... *gasp* a conversation! There are other photos of them together at the event but not at the table. Also, for whatever reason, Gates seems to be the only one not sporting a lanyard pass.

At any rate, they have most certainly been seen together and they have conversed before. Doubt it all you like. Uh.

Why are you trying to turn this into an argument?

Did I ever say that they have never met and don't meet? No... Because that would be stupid. Especially since Microsoft's first real break came from developing software for Apple. And with Jobs and Gates both having been giants of the industry for well over two decades, I'm sure they run into each other regularly.

What I said was in response to 128k's statement that they have done anything remotely close to a 75 minute 1-on-1 public conversation before. Which they most certainly have not.

So put your stick away.

The key word is public. I'm sure they have talked many times over the years. They may possibly be friends. The dinner, where they are seen having what looks to be a good time, isn't considered public.

...yeah, they definetely have been seen together and have talked to eachother. Duh .

However, this is different because when they have talked, there have not been journalists and cameras present...do you see a (major) difference?

This seems very cool though. I'm excited to see how it goes, however I agree that they will remain quite civil throughout their discussion. It will probably just be a "yay computers" themed conversation, rather then a "Microsoft vs. Apple" theme.

Oh brother. Enough with the drama. When did you say they never had a conversation? When you posted this:

I agree that they've never done an Actor's Studio style forum, but the quote you use for proof is just plain incorrect. Including the fact that neither of the instances cited qualify as a "conversation."

Point of advice, don't ask questions when you aren't prepared to deal with someone providing an answer.

No. Every one of his posts in this thread has just been trying to argue with Lateralus that Jobs and Gates have in fact publicly met before.

I understand the irony that my statement was not OT either, but it was just annoying seeing them go back and forth over such a mundane point.

OT...: so has anyone heard any other news of whether or not this will be broadcast on the web or are we just gonna have to read a text transcript?

It takes two (and in this case three) to argue.

And the very first response to the OP was off topic. And the post zro was responding to was off topic. I'm just saying, your being a little picky to point out and bitch about zro when there are many offenders here (a mod no less).

Well, in this case four.

But yeah ok, I agree with what you're (not your) saying. But the point I was trying to make, is that the subject Zro and Lateralus were going back and forth about was so lame that it was boring reading this thread...and yes, I know I could have just not responded etc. But whatever. I'm mad I'm even typing a response to this, because this is just prolonging the lameness of the thread.

I hope Steve says something about his growing marketshare, the ipod, and the success of simplicity. Then Gates admits taht OSX is better than Vista. That would be hilarious.

But it wasn't his fault he got the virus. But some other software vendor's fault when he shook his hand of course.

Well at the time he was making them, he had reason to, and they were pretty darn valid.
