US and Canadian Apple Stores will finally start conducting iPhone 5s screen replacements on or around August 4th, sources say. Some US stores have been piloting the service for the past several months, but now Apple Stores are reportedly receiving "large quantities" of replacement screens. iPhone 5c screen services began in January.

At the moment, people coming into an Apple Store with a broken 5s screen must pay for a replacement phone, which is normally $269 US without an AppleCare+ plan. A screen replacement is substantially cheaper, just $150, but harder for Apple to accomplish. It requires not just extra parts, but special machinery and training. An alternative is to go to a third-party repair service.

Third party repair services do NOT use factory original parts. There is a significant difference in the quality of displays and parts sourced third party. Buyer beware.
