Im trying to write an AppleScript that will automatically process images on an inserted disc: it runs a couple of Photoshop Actions and files the name, size, and a thumbnail of each photo in a FileMaker Pro database. Ive already created the script to process the images on an SD card, so 99% of the scripting is already done. Unfortunately, while the SD card always has the same name (the camera takes care of that), I now need to do the same thing for any CD-ROM. In other words, the script needs to be able to process the photos, regardless of what the client named their CD-ROM. (Yes, I could just tell them to name it the same thing every time, but where would be the fun in that? Besides, its easier to file them this way.)

Any ideas?

The app "system events" in 10.2 and later has an event suite for dealing with disks, folders, and files. With it, you should be able to do something to the effect of "get every disk whose kind is CD-ROM" or similar. The app lives in /System/Library/CoreServices; check out its dictionary.
