Though not quite as tasty...

I lied, btw. I'll blow some money on a car and probably a Mac Pro first. THEN I'd buy a lot of gold.

...and maybe a few hundred dollars of chicken bullion.

I'd buy a no-load mutual fund.

And have at least $50,000 per year for the rest of my life. Plus my original million bucks.

Sounds good to me. Then, after the 24 hours is up, I'd buy one of these. Energy-efficient, local materials, and just plain cool. If there's enough left over (which I doubt) I'd bring in some pool builders to set up a Lazy River around the thing as a moat.

It's easy. Buy 6 or 7 fully spec'd BMW 7 Series. Tell them you're paying cash... Today... And that you want the paperwork expedited.

You'd be done before lunch.

Of course there are a lot more FUN ways to spend that kind of cash, but if the goal was simply to get the $$$ spent in order to claim a greater prize, that's one way to do it.

How is donating to charity considered "dumping bucks"? End of day, you are either spending it for self-gratification or to help someone...

30 years at the local new albany country club would run $2.2 million, sans any multi-year discounts of course. however, 40% of your annual membership is refunded at the end of the year, so I guess it gets a bit cheaper.....

it is a nice place, but I'd rather own it for $2.2 million

You have to BUY SOMETHING. Donating to charity is just a form of dumping bucks. I'd say buy a few hotels and donate those but you couldn't complete the transaction today if you got the money at midnight. 24 hours is all you have. Each transaction takes time, so make 'em count. The Apple Store post is excellent, but you wouldn't have anything to show for it by midnight, at the end of the 24 hour spree. You're almost limited to small, horridly expensive things you can get back to your home with. Buying all the used exotic cars from Carmax might work IF you could get al of the titles transferred to your name by midnight.

I have this vague recollection (possibly entirely wrong) that in the movie there were constraints on not being allowed to buy more than one of a kind of thing and that there was a price limit. So, you couldn't buy more than one car, for example or one costing more than (say) $50,000. Seems like it would make winning much harder.

A million dollars in lottery tickets so that I can have a chance to make eleventy billion dollars.

But seriously, if someone wants to know what I'd spend a $1M, PM me so we can arrange for the funds to be transferred to my bank account, then I'll let you know.

Do I have to be in the city I live in right now? I think I'd probably buy Macs for everyone I know. Then a few cars for everyone I know. Could I pay off my parents debt?

I think the banks drag their fet too much to actually get that transaction done to transfer funds to pay off the bills. Unless you went to the bank that they had the debt with and paid it off.

I could rent a truck, and go to a place that sold Brass Model RR engines, and buy a million bucks worth of 'em. After 5-6 years they would be worth about 45 percent more! In the mean time I'd pick thru them and choose 20-30 of 'em for myself.

Another idea is to buy as many exotic cars as I could and sell the boring ones!

pay off mortgage, $300,000
buy new cars, $140,000
pay off parents' and sister's mortgage: 100,000
trip to apple store, new macs for household, and get this wireless entertainment thing figured out: 10,000
followed by trip to best buy for new flat-screen etc: 10,000

I guess a college fund doesn't count, eh?

then the rest would go to oceanfront property in southern maine/northern massachusetts. Darn it. $500k left. For that I could only get a fallen-down shack. Maybe I'm selfish and don't pay off my family's mortgages.

The Brewster's Millions challenge would be a piece of piss - just exchange the money continuously for other currencies and you would have none left in next to no time, especially if it was something like Zimbabwean dollars.

I'd use all the money to buy a large quantity of precious metals or gems, and resell them later for a nearly equivalent sum.

:)
