What's up with all the lighting, holograms and special effects when it is supposed to be a music (doesn't require special effects and strobes) concert for environmental awareness?

Xzibit is on stage. I'm sure every car he pimped out with multiple flatscreen monitors, multiple batteries and faster engines were very environmentally friendly.

Now Madonna is singing about how we can change the world. Her ten mansions and world tours use more power than most villages.

Al Gore is making a speech. He has gone all Jedi on us by appearing in hologram form. This is the same Al Gore who has dual 30 inch monitors and a HD screen in his paper filled office btw. All those large screens so he can read the news.

If this hypocrisy continues I fully expect Michael Moore to appear telling us we should eat less.

Would it be more environmentally friendly to read a bunch of printed materials? I don't think so. However, I do agree there is much hypocrisy with this concert. Some musicians have spoken out about the waste.

If you saw the photo of Gore's office it is full of printed materials stacked up so high and you can't see a single bare surface. Then you see him sitting there surfing the web on dual 30" monitors and has a 42" plasma turned on that he's not watching. Not exactly sending out the right message.

However, I do agree there is much hypocrisy with this concert. Some musicians have spoken out about the waste.
Biggest critic of this concert has been Bob Geldof himself!

"We are all ****ing conscious of global warming," Bob Geldof claimed charitably this week. "It's just an enormous pop concert or the umpteenth time that, say, Madonna or Coldplay get on stage."

Celebrities MacNN (partisan) Republicans are obsessed over:

- Al Gore and family
- Michael Moore
- Paris Hilton
- Cindy Sheehan
- God and Jesus
- Hilary Clinton
- Bill Clinton

You guys of all people should understand the whole economic supply and demand thing. Your demand is keeping the very things alive that you despise.

If you don't like something, don't pay attention to it. Don't buy into the hype. It's as simple as that. If you choose to disregard this suggestion, perhaps you shouldn't whine so fervently about the celebrities you seem unwilling to ignore?

Since when is paper bad for the environment? It's a ****ing renewable, recyclable, biodegradable natural product.

Hee hee... Still sore about the Dreamweaver thing? Did you not notice the thread a while back where other people also referred to DW as an old-school 1990s web design app?

You're welcome to continue nurturing your grudge about a thread I literally forgot about, it doesn't bother me. I barely pay attention to your posts anyway.

Wow, dude, are you at all familiar with printing processes? In it most common form, It is a nasty business. Making paper is not very clean either. Some paper is recycled, but not that much. It is very difficult to make a bright recycled content paper.

And the only thing natural about paper is that it starts with trees.

I just saw Duran Duran do "Girls on Film". Now I know the planet needs to be saved!

Maybe the Spice Girls can get back together... I suppose there is no hope for that.

I hope the Spice Girls really do get back together. When they first came out I really didn't "get" their music. Perhaps it was too subtly nuanced. Now that I am older and wiser, maybe their music will make more sense to me.

Live Earth is lame. Who is arrogant and naive enough to think that this concert has any effect on the climate? And when was the last time rock stars had half the cognitive ability to correctly identify the solutions to political and meteorological issues?

For those interested in info about this event without the usual reactionary commentary:

SOS | Live Earth | 7.7.07

With support from the U.S. Green Building Council, creators of the LEED Green Building Rating System, Live Earth will implement new Green Event Guidelines. All Live Earth venues will be designed and constructed by a team of sustainability engineers who will address the environmental and energy management challenges of each concert site, as well as the operations of sponsors, partners and other Live Earth affiliates. Each venue will not only be designed to maintain a minimum environmental impact, but will showcase the latest state-of-the-art energy efficiency, on-site power generation, and sustainable facilities management practices.

Couldn't you apply these same arguments to any form of demonstration or protest?

Should we not demonstrate or protest? If so, what kind of Democracy would we have without this?

Man, you guys are real tiresome. I would be absolutely thrilled if some of you could put aside your partisan beliefs and preconceptions you inject into everything you hear about and/or read, and actually bring comments to this forum that aren't simply emotional diatribes and rants.

Coherent arguments are a wonderful thing.

It reminds me of this.

And no, you cannot use the same argument for any sort of demonstration or protest. Demonstrations and protests that don't consist of doing exactly what you'd be doing anyway, that actually show some kind of dedication, might have some kind of impact — if you can show that you actually have an idea what you're talking about. This is a bunch of pop singers singing and pop fans listening. Like, ZOMG, am I protesting things right now without even realizing it?

Well, here's a coherent argument for you then:

- Today's events were supposed to be about raising awareness of global warming.

- Everybody with the capability to view today's events (i.e. a TV) is already aware of global warming, since it's been mentioned on the TV every ten minutes 24/7 for the last year.

Therefore; the whole purpose of today's events was invalid, rendering the whole thing utterly pointless. Aside from Jessica bouncing, of course. I liked that.

It's an awareness concert. It was wrong of me to characterize it as a demonstration of protest, but the objective is sort of the same: to draw attention to the issue in an attempt to spark change.

I just don't have any problems with anything of this sort, especially since they are apparently trying hard to put together this event using renewable energy (whether they actually are or not, I have no idea).

Perhaps the concert was an attempt to try to mobilize people to try to persuade their governments to make changes (as well as to inspire to make some personal changes)?

How effective this sort of thing is I don't know, but I don't see anything wrong with such an effort. Exercising democracy is a good thing.

Oh there was one thing that was a bit wrong. Between groups they played little promo videos. One of them was nothing but 60 seconds of animals taking a dump. It was quite revolting. That's not the way to promote awareness of global warming.

My carbon footprint is probably 1,000,000 times less than Al Gore's competition for the title of Lord Protector of the Planet Earth

We don't need rich schmucks telling us to turn off our lights and listen to their music. We can carry on living the way we do. Technology is getting more eco friendly with time. Just bring on the terra-forming (create new inhabitable land, plant new forests, enrich the oceans by melting glacial ice, etc) and everything will snap in place.

Live Earth is promoting green to save the planet - what planet are they on? | the Daily Mail

The Daily Mail has found that five of the top performing acts together have an annual output of almost 2,000 carbon tonnes. Madonna alone has an annual carbon footprint of 1,018 tonnes, according to John Buckley.

Remember, the average Briton produces just ten tonnes.

Same day she realises that that particular outfit wouldn't be alluring even if Jessica <insert choice of surname> was wearing it.

Mind you, since her target audience is generally into the bum fun, I don't suppose it matters.

Why am I even talking about this? Somebody shoot me.
