So i'm attempting to use my Mac Mini with my new Gateway LCD which has DVI and VGA inputs.

The VGA works fine with the adapter, but whenver i attempt to use DVI i get a message that reads "NO SIGNAL"
this has happend with two different cables, and two different monitors.

Anyone else have a problem like this?

First of all, is this just when you have the display hooked up via one cable? Is there a setting that allows you to change from DVI to VGA?
Mac mini 1.42 Ghz 1GB RAM 80 GB HD + 160 GB External HD

there is an "INPUT" button on the LCD. when set to DVI it just displays NO SIGNAL. when i take out the DVI cable and plug in the VGA adapter and VGA cable (which is still connected to the LCD)it works like a charm.

Could this be the problem?:

http://bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi/dvicabletypes.htm

I read that Gateway use DVI-D but I know the Apple Cinema Displays use DVI-I.

I reckon you are stuck with VGA unless there is a DVI-I>DVI-D adapter. Is there any advantage to DVI over VGA? If you find the display is too dark or low quality, try a different DVI>VGA adapter, I heard the one that comes with the Mini wasn't that good. It works fine for me on a CRT though.

the gateway does use DVI-D according to the spec page.

what exactly does the Mini Output to? and is there away to convert it? because i have two different cables, one must be I the other D

according to the apple site...
DVI video output for digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels; supports 20-inch Apple Cinema display and 23-inch Apple Cinema HD display; supports coherent digital displays up to 154MHz; supports non-coherent digital displays up to 135MHz

EDIT
From what i'm reading DVI-I is both analog and digital.
the monitor supports DVI-D
the cables I have are DVi-D
should i get DVI-I cables? I don't get why it wouldn't work if DVI-I supports both.

Hmmm, I think DVI-I ports actually output both analogue and digital as you say. DVI-D isn't much different but it only supports the digital signal. For some reason you need to use two different cables.

If you got a cable with your Mini, it would likely be DVI-I since the Mini output is DVI-I. If the cable came with the display, then it should be DVI-D and that should work OK with the Mini's output because you can apparently plug a DVI-D cable into a DVI-I port. If you don't have a DVI-D cable then that's what you need. You can identify what cables you have with the diagrams on this page:

One thing I keep seeing regarding DVI displays is people rebooting their systems after connecting the display. I know that someone had problems with their LCD disconnecting when their machine went to sleep. There are products like this one:

http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1378

which let you disconnect a DVI display without rebooting. It would be really annoying if you did have to reboot and I know you don't with VGA. Try rebooting after connecting it to your computer using the cable you have and see if it works.

DVI-I allows you to send a digial (DVI-D) or analog (DVI-A, which never really took off). You can use a DVI-I cable a DVI-D port.

IIRC, DVI-A is not part of the official standard, which is why it's not common. The only use of DVI-A connectors is as plug adapters/cables to VGA.

i tried using a DVI-D cable, two of them actually neither of them work...my Monitor only has a DVI-D input.

Hmmm, I just found this thread:

http://forums.macosxhints.com/archiv...p/t-24042.html

Other people have had trouble with gateway monitors too.

Is there an input button on your display that lets you select the video source?

I can't think of anything else to try.
