Here are the results for May:

Andy8 -24
Simon -8
turtle777 -7
Spheric Harlot -5
AKcrab -3
CharlesS -2
imitchellg5 -2
angelmb -1
Big Mac -1
ctt1wbw -1
Doofy -1
jokell82 -1
Laminar -1
msuper69 -1
Person Man -1
scaught -1
Shaddim -1
Thorzdad -1

A new contender, Andy8, takes the crown for May, with more reports than the next four contenders put together. However, I must remind all that while I requested reports by PM when a spammer has been identified but who has not yet posted, many of the PM reports were on people who HAD posted-this added to the workload of putting together the stats, and yes, I'll blame the lateness of my posting the report tonight on reconciling the PM reports and the regular reports.

There were 75 regular reports and 11 PM reports with only 58 unique spammers reported through the "report" button and 4 unique spammers reported through PMs

Now go forth and do more good deeds!

The main argument against extending this to regular members is a desire not to punish innocent lurkers.

It appears this wish was granted before it was asked. Hooray for time travel.

Back when I hid the Bio info on banned members, I made an error in the IF statement. It was intended to hide banned member info, unless the banned member has 10 or more posts. This was a simple way to exempt temp bans from being affected, since we wouldn't leave that many posts on a spammer.

In fact, it hid the Bio info from all members, until they have 10 or more posts. It's been that way for about a year and a half now. I may correct the statement, so regular members get visible Bio info after 3-5 posts. 10 seems excessive for an innocent.

About half of Andy8's validated reports were via PMs. Not all of those validly reported spammers were reported by other members, but many were. And a number of reports-not just Andy's-were not validated. That's because we had a lot of people post with "interesting" links, or odd links in their signatures. And we had a number of new members who were, lets call it "clumsy" with their enthusiasm, but have not done anything to indicate they meant to spam.

Also we have a bunch of new mods on board this past month-all promoted at the end of May. That meant something like triple the regular number of abuse report posts as we helped our new staff members figure out how to do their jobs. So Andy, I had plenty of time while waiting on someone to arrive for our little party, but it was more work than normal. If in fact "normal" applies to this task!

July's Stats! Hot, fresh and un-spammy1

Andy8 -21
Spheric Harlot -14
turtle777 -5
CharlesS -4
Big Mac -3
angelmb -1
arkayn -1
Brien -1
ChrisF -1
Doofy -1
imitchellg5 -1
Phileas -1
subego -1

Andy8 again topped the list. Vigilance appreciated, but everyone was on the ball in July. There were 55 unique spammers reported by members in July compared to 74 in June. Sorta slow? Not really-we have a number of new mods who were also on the ball, and the total number of spammers was about equal to those in June.

In addition to real spammers, a number of NONspammers were reported. Please note that reporting everything that has a link in it will lead me to adjust the rules. We need intelligent reports, not random ones. For example, some people have reported one member whose signature includes a link to his windshield business-yet the member is actually contributing to discussions, not just posting nonsense or null content to get his links visible. I'll point out that we ALLOW real users to include links to what they're interested in in their sigs; they have to be real users, that's all.

And for future reference, if you report an established member for spamming, your report will be scrutinized very carefully-for how you expect someone who's been around long enough to be established has turned spammer. Again, not all links (regardless of whether they're to commercial sites) are spam.

August results are in! Sorry it took so long to get this together, but frankly I've been busy and August's reports were, shall we say "complex."

Andy8.-15 +28 by PM
turtle777.-8
Spheric Harlot.-5
CharlesS.-4
chabig.-1
ChrisF.-1
Dork..-1
imitchellg5.-1
jokell82.-1
MacinTommy.-1
mduell-1
msuper69-1
Person Man-1

65 valid reports, 41 individual spammers reported with the button. 29 spammers were reported by PM (not all by Andy8, either). On the other hand, 8 NON-spammers were reported by PM as well, which made it harder to compile this data.

Again, Andy8 has tirelessly hunted down spammers, and his "false positives" have stayed at about the same rate, both by reports and PMs. The rest of you have been on top of it too, but I'm still not sure Andy8 sleeps. Maybe he'll share the secret of how he "catches" spammers that haven't posted yet with the rest of the membership (the staff knows, but we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by spilling the beans).

Bord123 was reported 6 times for his "without a prescription" drug spam. Some members got to report the same spammer (often with the same spam) in different forums and/or different threads in the same forum. One spammer used at least 4 handles to post the same (“Camera Inside”) spam, while another used at least two handles to post “convert DVD to iPad” spam. And some spammers posted very different spam in different forums, so I had to go by when the individual spammer was reported, versus when a particular spam post was reported. Once again, I'll ask everyone who considers PMing about a spammer to FIRST see if you can report it through the "report" button-it's much easier to keep track of and the whole staff sees this, not just a couple of us that you might address in the PM.

October's Spam Reporting Contest Results:

Andy8 4
subego 4
Big Mac 1
CharlesS 1
Headshot 1
msuper69 1
turtle777 1
Waragainstsleep 1

Yes, that's a total of only 24 individual (valid) spammers reported. There were a LOT of reports to go through, and several "real" members were reported as spammers.

Did I just miss doing September's results? It looks like it. I'll get that handled shortly. Boy, September and early October were hectic for me-it looks like they were more hectic than I thought.

Edited for spelling. "Miss" only has 2 "s's".

Andy, I have to think that you're getting more sleep since we fixed our hack. But we really do appreciate your help back then. We seem to have fewer "buy cheap phones from us!!!11!!" and similar spam of late, and I can't help but think that-for now, anyway-many of the sleazeballs have given up on spamming MacNN's forums. I don't think it's coincidental that just a couple of months ago we were mopping up spammers moments after they had registered.

It looks like I'm on top of things this time around. Here we are in the first weekend of the new month and I have the spam reporting stats! I know-isn't that amazing?

Anyway, here's the results:
Spheric Harlot ..... 15
Andy8 .............. 5
turtle777.......... 4
rjenkinson ....... 2
Big Mac............ 1
brassplayersrock² 1
imitchellg5 ...... 1
l008com .......... 1
Laminar ........... 1
shifuimam ....... 1
subego ............ 1

Members reported 33 individual spammers. And one spammer, abdul, reported himself (before being reported by rjenkinson, who got the credit). One thing I really notices this time around was that there were a lot more reports of poor behavior by regular members than spam reports. I hope this was just because most of us in the States were sort of "weathered in" and with better weather we'll see better cooperation and politeness.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for helping keep the forums safe and healthy!

I'm sorry to have to say that the February report will be delayed. I have almost all the data on my iMac, but I won't get it set up until late today. We had our floors redone, and it was like moving out of the house to make room, so while we're back to using most of the house, the study, where my desk is, isn't set back up yet. It shouldn't take much time to finish up the stats, but I don't think I'll get to it today.

Sorry again.

How exactly, does a spammer self report? Do they do it accidentally, or do they hit the "report post" button and then say, "I'm sorry, I spammed your board. Please delete it?"

Someone made a report on a regular post (one of the stickies), and the report was the spam. Probably he/she/it tried to reply to the post but hit the report button instead. Twice.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

It's possible that those are bots, and "report post" sounds more like a posting button than "quick reply".

Or, another possibility: if the thread is closed or the user doesn’t have permission to post in it, all links that take you to a place where you can actually post are disabled. The report link and the URL link are the only two functioning links, and since the URL link doesn’t take you to a posting page, I presume they just go back and use the report link instead.

(This is assuming that the bots are sort of generally programmed for vB, enough to recognise that the link should take them to a new page with a text box on it; but not enough to separate the report page from the quote page)

Current registration requires the new user to reply to an email sent to the address the new user provides before they can post-though they can report immediately. I think this is what happened with our "new friend" from February-he/it went with the only button that did anything he/it saw as useful...and got it wrong.

I thought that I got two this time around? Unless someone else reported one within the five minutes I noticed him starting to post. Both spammers were on the same night.

I should have spam reporting stats for April done and posted early tomorrow (my time). Last weekend was a bit too busy for me to be able to get anything done on the stats. Tomorrow should be open enough for me to get it handled pretty quickly.

As promised, April's stats:

Spheric Harlot..............14

imitchellg5....................2
subego..........................2

We had several multi-post spammers, and a few that were frankly way more obvious than I expected to see. And we had a bunch of spammers reported by several members, often for the same post-way to go, folks!
