I am sure I am missing something, but guys, I can not figure out why ebay prices of iPhones are more than a brand spanking new one from the apple store. On ebay prices usually drop if not freefall after an item has been out especially if it can be readily bought at the store 10 miles away. Even used ones are clse to new prices. SO, what is the benifit from getting one on ebay for more than the apple store, like I said I am sure I am missing something.

Thanks
Force

Apple iPhone (AT&T) - eBay (item 260199017747 end time Jan-07-08 22:38:11 PST)

It's actually pretty common for things on ebay to go for higher than retail. Some people get carried away with their bidding, or don't realize what the actual price is. And other people seem to like to get everything on ebay even if it's easier and cheaper to get it elsewhere. In short, I don't think there's any benefit to getting one on ebay.

The winning bidder could also be in an area where there is no AT&T service and thus the iPhone is officially unavailable. The bidder gets it, unlocks it, and now has an iPhone without having to drive hours to a AT&T service area.

Can't you get them from Apple online even in that case, though?

Nope, AFAIK, the various online Apple stores will not ship outside their home country.

By "area" I thought he meant an area of the US where there isn't any AT&T coverage.

Pretty sure that 'area' means 'countries', but you might be right.

I dont know, I watch ebay very carefully and people are pretty smart about where to get the best deals on items.

I think it has to do with being anonymous when buying it off ebay and not having to register with apple, thus being able to hack it.

You can hack a phone you buy from Apple, though.

Depending on how much more than retail sometimes eBay is preferable to paying tax at a regular storefront.

I bought my iPhone off ebay because I'm in Canada which makes it a royal pain, if not close to impossible considering that I don't own a car and don't have an friends south of the border, to try to buy one direct from Apple.

edit: to confirm a post further up the thread, you cannot buy from the Apple USA online store if you don't have both an American credit card and a delivery address in the USA.

The auction has been cancelled and the item removed.
