Love the colors, but I look at it and feel there must be an uncensored version somewhere.

Someone else put it better: It feels like the image needs to finish loading. The front is also less disconcerting.

It makes my eyes hurt, like I'm continually trying to focus.

Please tell me there's not a sailboat picture hiding in there somewhere.

[EDIT] The front side is really nice though.

Some country needs to put Jackson Pollock's art on their currency.

The varying lengths are something I wish the U.S. would copy. It would make organizing your money in your wallet a lot, lot easier.

I think it would just annoy me. Color differences are much better.

Yeah, differing lengths would be a PITA. Perhaps different textures would be easier to identify bills because you wouldn't even have to look at it.

Almost there... Maybe another 10 years we'll be a cashless society - people will view cash the same way we view pay phones today. Only they'll be mocked and called idiots, and have atomic wedgies distributed as prescribed by social mores.

Cash allows anonymous purchases - it prevents routine government financial surveillance. Also, they can freeze a pay account, whereas they have to physically stop you to relieve you of your cash. Unfortunately they do do the latter - Canadians have been warned against travel in the US with any significant cash.

Two dimensional op-art, or a code? By manipulating the different lengths and hues of the bars, could one create validation protocols?
Maybe there is an inverse relation between the percentage of cash transactions in an economy and the degree of control by the industrial/government complex. There are major economies, some in the EU, where the cash economy is what keeps the economy going.
As to different physical sizes of money, when I experienced it in Europe a while ago, it was a major PITA, because the size difference would lead to rubbing and disintegration of the currency. On the other hand, those Kroners seem to be staggered size wise in a ergonomic way, in which case, that would be very practical.

How do blind people handle cash in the US?
That's why we have different bill sizes and Braille on the Euro!

They're for different things. Shape differences are for the blind - color differences are for everyone else, to make it a little easier to find the right bill.

The setup in Sweden is (although they plan to change the bills):

1 kr: silvery coin, about the size of a quarter.
5 kr: bigger silvery coin.
10 kr: goldish yellow coin, smaller diameter but much thicker. Kinda looks like the £1
20 kr: small bill, purple-pinkish tint
50 kr: high and short, almost square, yellowish bill
100 kr: "the regular size" bill, blue-green tint
500 kr: bigger bill, predominately red.

The 1000 kr which you almost never see anymore (because they don't stock ATMs with it) is even bigger than the 500 and mostly grey. Even bigger bills have been retired to make it a little harder for money launderers. The old 10 kr bill was greenish and looked the most like a dollar bill. Smaller coins have existed but been retired - they have been physically smaller silvery coins, with the smallest denomination a thin coppery coin.

Paying in the US is always a bit disconcerting. You can't rely on being able to use your credit card everywhere, so you have to carry cash, and what cash there is is confusingly similar. You get change in coins that are worth basically nothing. When you can pay by card, you sign instead of using a PIN - I don't think I've done that here since the nineties.

Not beggars exactly, but people soliciting donations (like for the Amnesty International or the Salvation Army or something) sometimes accept credit cards now.

It depends upon the store.

The store I worked at until a few years ago actually switched from PIN system to predominantly signatures a short while before I left — some cards won't allow signature and will require PIN authorization, but the system will default to signature.

As I understand it, there were two reasons for this move:
a) The transaction fees were slightly cheaper, and
b) requiring a signature put the onus on card abuse at the issuer's door, rather than the store's, as the store could prove that they went through at least minimal effort to verify the card holder's identity (since we kept the signed receipts). Previously, some charges would be reversed retroactively, leaving the store holding the empty bag.

Thanks for the info - I always thought that it depends on the card issuer!?
But that would explain now why I didn't need either a PIN or a signature in the MOMA shop in New York (or in any cab in NY)!
Made it a lot easier but I don't want to lose my credit card there!

I likes it. Modern and contemporary. I so find it visually interesting. Too much currency design is weighted down by tradition, old fashioned ideas of gravitas etc
The new UK coins that fot together to make a picture are nice.

I do like the idea of executable code hidden in the design of the notes although practically no more use than a QR code.

Living with different sized money has never seemed an issue. I do wonder how the U.S. peeps get on with their same sized bills but I guess you get to like what's normal.

Wow, a horrible realization - but a quick google search indicates that blind people fold the bills in varying lengths to make them unique.

I'm sure it won't, but it will certainly become much less common. I cringe at this, but it's already common for people to buy a $2 or $3 dollar item with a card. 10 years ago they would've been laughed at, now it's acceptable.

I buy everything with my card. I don't care if it's $1.00.

Why does the total matter? It's all about convienience.

I don't have fuss with cash, I get rewards and it's easier to se exactly where my money is going. As long as you stay on top of it, it's a win/win/win.

I'm an NFC addict, use it every chance I get. The drink machines outside my local Sam's have it and it's too awesome.

But what about the cash they receive in return ?
Will they always have to rely on a "folder" to fold their bills ?

I figured by now they'd use a smartphone app to recognize and name each bill aloud. Perhaps give orientation as well.

Plenty of smartphones come free with a low-end contract. They're not particularly good smartphones, but these days, it's almost easier to get one than find a dumbphone on contract.
