I have a Powermac G4 and a few older Macs at home. Can I safely install the Mac OS 8.6 from the G4 CD onto the older Macs?

It is probably safe, but technically illegal since the OS liscence allows installation and use on only one system at a time.

OK, so where can I get a copy of 8.6 that I may legally install? :-)

um, er... ah... MacOS 8.6_update_is freely available, you install it onto MacOS 8.5 (and possibly earlier MacOS 8's, i can't remember)
Apple has it posted here: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates....6?OpenDocument
if you have a MacOS CD with 8.6 on it, all the better... go ahead and use it on_YOUR_ Macs and tell InterPol when they beat your door down that they can come and torture me for telling you to do this...

I checked...the 8.6 update is for 8.5 users only.
Thanks all for your help!
