My iPhoto 5 is crashing on import... this is happening even though I have rebuilt the library from scratch. I think it's an iphoto bug I'm running into. Does anyone have similar experience or workarounds.
The factors involved:
1. It's a big library 17,500 photos mainly RAW files.... 70 gigs
2. I'm importing RAW files from a Nikon D70
3. The library is on an external firewire drive.
4. I have a 1.8ghz G5 with 3gigs of memory.
There are 2 types of crashes that happen
Crash A: All the photos import to the right locations, but at the end of the import when writing the database, the program crashes out.
Crash B: The program gets "stuck" on a photo and you just get the spinning wheel of death forever.
Crash A is much more common happening about 80% of the time I import.
Other notes:
There seems to be no problem importing simple jpgs (ie not RAW files)
The crashes seem to happen somewhat randomly.
Very occassionally there will be no crash and everything will import fine. There is much more likelyhood that this will happen when I import a very small number of photos. Also it is less likely to crash if I use the "add to library" menu item as opposed to dragging the files in.
The crashes happen 85-90% of the time.
They happen even after safebooting and with clean copies of iPhoto.
If I use the option-command keys at startup after a crash and select "recover orphaned files I get a "some files might be locked or you do not have proper permissions to rebuild the iphoto library message". There are no locked files. Does anyone know what the permissions should be?
I can post crash logs if that's helpful.
