Dual 2.0 G5 -- iTunes 6 CD import to 160 kbs AAc = 25-29x.
iTunes 7, same setings = 3.5-4x.

Anybody else seeing this?

I just imported a CD to Apple Lossless and didn't see anything unusual in the ripping speed.

Same problem here on my 24" iMac - speeds of 3x-5x on any CD I try.

Hmmm. 192 Kbit VBR mp3 on a single 1.8 G5 was normal: about 25x.

Taken with my normal Apple Lossless ripping speeds, this seems to indicate that this is only a problem when ripping to AAC. Maybe Apple introduced some "improvements" to the encoder in the accompanying Quicktime update.

I know. I did mp3 specifically to see if the problem was limited or widespread.

After browsing Apple's forums (they're slow & haven't deleted the thread, yet) it would appear to be widespread, but only happenning to people with larger libraries. One guy reports temporarily replacing his library with a new one, and speed was back to normal. Put the large library back, and slow again.

I've got 7600 songs in my library.

Okay, same CD, same computer, same settings (160 kbps AAC):

1. Clean account that I keep for troubleshooting, with empty iTunes library. 20-25x.

2. Main account with large library 5x on average. (breifly peaked at 6.8x on one song)

That might be below the threshold where the problem becomes noticable. Mine is 39 gb, and the guy who did the testing at the Apple suport forums had 80 gb. Did you try ripping an AAc file at 160 kbs? Largish libraries & AAC files seemed to be the common thread.

I haven't tried an AAC: I may tonight. I put my library size on there as another data point.

I had iTunes import a CD this morning. It said it was copying at 0.10X. I stepped away for a moment and it had finished, so I guess it was just waiting for the system to stabilize or some other buzzword. Anyway, it did a fine job ripping the disc to a 320kbps MP3 in only a couple of minutes.

My library was in disarray so at the time I did this it had about 1200 songs.

I deleted a few playlists (maybe 10 out of 50) and ripping speeds are now back to normal - 20x at least.

Maybe it was a 'bad' smart playlist that was causing the issue.

The 7.0.1 update would appear to have completely fixed the issue. I got 25-26x towards the end of the CD I just ripped.

Hi, im new to these forums. I've had this problem of slow encoding on the mac for around the last 12 months. When i first went mac in July last yeay i was running Panther and iTunes 6 with rip speeds of around x20 but now im lucky if i get up as far as x8. I'm running iTunes 7.0.1 with OSX 10.4.7. I rip to mp3 at 256kbps.

Cheers
