The rather prominent blood vessel which usually runs near the inside of the ankle.
If this was damaged (cut/severed) would that be a major problem in terms of bleeding??

Sounds like you're talking about the anterior tibial recurrent, which would bleed like crazy if it's cut. It also branches off into the foot though, so if it's cut just below the ankle, it wouldn't be too bad.

It seems very vulnerable.
Do people ever bleed to death from accidentally cutting it? ie. dropping a sharp knife and it ends up hitting it or brushing against a sharp edge while walking, etc...
Should I be taking steps to protect it on a daily basis?

Don't worry about it too much. It's tougher than you'd think.

After some deep thought, I'm convinced this comment should be made in every MacNN Lounge thread.

He probably just stepped out of the shower, and while still slippery wet, started practicing with a knife, and when it slipped out of his hand, he was like, oh crap and covered his manhood, and in the process, kicked his foot out, and got cut after the knife bounced off the floor.
