If you roll over it (as you do if youve just hit macnn on your bookmark bar), it completly overlays the forums main navigation menu!

Wow, that's brutal. This is *exactly* why I run AdBlock in my browsers.

Same here. For me every site gets its chance. MacNN showed me an annoying ad like that once so I started blocking ads for MacNN. Now it gets no ads at all. Decent ads or none at all. Their call.

If you are blocking them via CSS MacNN is not being "punished" at all if you would have otherwise not clicked on any of the ads. For whatever ads MacNN makes money from via product placement (if at all), these sorts of ad blockers do not block the ads from being downloaded.

It does appear that tee CSS blocker is a bit temperamental tho!

We don't need the business office to be "punished." Once an offensive ad is reported, we pass it up to the business office, and it takes a little while for the office to contact the advertising vendor to get stuff pulled. Any ad that doesn't get clicked on will eventually be pulled, and this particularly nasty kind is something lots of people hate with a vengeance. Now I generally DO use an ad blocker (I use Firefox), but that's as much because of the time some ads take to load, even with my fast connection, as not seeing them.

By the way, did anyone manage to capture the address of the ad? That helps track down the advertiser.

It's annoying the poop out of me too.

It's an ad for Spain tourism: Spain tourist info for your travel to Spain., Glenn. For some reason it doesn't even work for me when I click on it (no-mods Safari 3.2.1), so can't grab any more info than that for you.

Edit: Oops, didn't know that URL would resolve. It's "www . spain . info".

Doofy: would you quit pushing Spain on us? I think we get it that you like Spain, but maybe it's time to give it a rest?

Thanks Doofy. I had expected the ad to have a referrer-included URL, which would be helpful-the picture richwig posted has the basic URL in it, but having the other data helps identify who sold that ad space.

It's back again. And I can't click it because it never finishes loading.

Every time you move the mouse over, the status bar adds more items. Currently it's "completed 69 of 71 items". Mouse over once and it's "completed 73 of 75 items".
During this time there's no data transferred from server to client (at least none that menumeters picks up). This continues indefinitely (currently "103 of 105" after a few more mousings).

I just got one that flew across the screen... I hit the little "x" on the ad before I thought to take a screenshot.

Yup, me too (though I didn’t click the X, it disappeared on its own while I was going through the source code to find the clickthrough link—which I didn’t, ’cause I wasn’t patient enough …).

If you're that upset, why not just block the ads?

Because I'm at work, and I don't want to install extra software (it's against company IT policy).
