Lesson 1: never assume..........
but i just opened my 12" PB revB and found OS X.2.7 preloaded
I bought from CDW, authorized, and i assume high volume, dealer so didn't even think of asking.
now what? i have to shell out another $129? or return the unit.
also, i would prefer the clean install of Panther.

Call CDW and see if they'll give you Panther. Otherwise you can get the upgrade from Apple for $20. It'll allow you to do a clean install from the CD. Whatever the case, you definitely don't have to shell out $130! I think that Apple is only shipping Panther on the new iBooks and eMacs at this time, so it wouldn't have mattered where you ordered your PowerBook from.

You should have coupons with you software bundle that will allow you to get the 10.3 full package for 19.95. Its not free, but it beats 129. If you live near an apple store, try pleading your case with them. I know that I was able to get the "free" 10.1 upgrade for absolute free by walking into Circuit City (when they sold macs) and just picking up a copy.

If you've just bought a new Mac you can get it for "shipping and handling" fee only. Order it at:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
You just need to enter your new machine's serial number.

But does it let you do a clean install without installing 10.2.8 first?

Yes it does. I got mine that way, and it is a complete full Panther CD collection.
Besides, if he's just got a new Mac, he's already got 10.2.x installed (10.2.7 he said, I think).

You have to have Jaguar (10.2.x) installed it does not have to be 10.2.8

My PB bought from a local Apple Store doesn't have Panther preloaded so they gave me a $20 discount to get Panther for free.
