This get bandied about a lot, and it sure seems like political rhetoric. At first I dismissed this, but now I'm not so certain...

The frequency in which he brings up ratings, winning the election, giving himself A+ ratings, going after comedians that tease him, and just talk that promotes his self-image and aptitude makes me pretty uneasy. It seems sociopathic.

Is this a thing, or just a quirk of his that is not something to be concerned over?

Let's say he's a sociopath.

Where do we go from there?

He's also Hitler.

Where do we go from there?

Well, for one I think we should stop trying to understand him using the lens of a so-called "normal" person.

I agree with the assertion he's not a rational actor, if that's what's being got at.

He's a troll who gets what he wants by unbalancing his opponents.

And by being a petulant ass, though maybe that's covered by "troll".

How do you explain his obsession over his ratings and image?

Well, he's clearly a sociopath.

Or our culture places inordinate weight on fame.

One of those.

He's clearly a cripplingly insecure narcissist.
I don't get the impression that he cares about anyone other than himself. If he appears to care about his family members its likely he only cares how they reflect on him or how they represent his legacy.

He's a college-age Eric Cartman with richer parents. I think he lacks empathy, he certainly doesn't seem to have any grasp of sexual consent
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

What we see in Trump as POTUS is no different than what we saw in Trump as CANDIDATE. So AFAIC if Trump has a screw loose of sorts then the larger question is what does that say about those who actually voted for the man?

People who voted for him didn't seem to see it. They didn't see through his obvious lies, his bluster, his over-exaggerated self-promotion. They didn't see that he's a shameless money-grubbing thief, that he takes credit for others good deeds. They couldn't even see that he is a nasty, angry, spoilt child. So much so they defended him when others pointed it out.

How were so many were so stupid as to believe him to be more trustworthy and less corrupt than Hillary? Brings us back to poor judges of character I guess.

This is as dumb as the people trying to armchair-diagnose Hillary's coughs.

I would say that it is dumb to diagnose specific stuff with certainty, but it isn't dumb to diagnose some unusual thought patterns (or at least communication) based on the many things he has said that many people seem to have difficulty reconciling with.

For example, people were really confused why as he was describing the decision process of bombing Syria he needed to say how awesome his chocolate cake in his estate was. Likewise, for things like his inauguration crowd sizes, his electoral victory, how fantastic he is at everything, etc. I can't be the only one that is thrown by the fact that whenever he is asked a policy question he needs to frame it around how awesome he is.
