Do not listen to the little Star Wars guy. I think he may be Canadian, and they have no concept of money, because theirs, while really pretty, isn't worth much.

Seriously, there was just an article linked on Macsurfer (I'll see if I can find it) about this very scam. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

heh ... I'm very, very tempted to echo Luke's advice here , but first let's recap:

1. You send these jokers a $250 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit;

2. They claim to talk to Apple, and "try" to get a discount ... but you have no idea in advance what (or if) the discount will be;

3. If you don't like the price they finally tell you -- whatever it is -- you're out the $250;

4. They reserve the right to also charge you for any "miscellaneous" expenses they might have.

C'mon ... even if there were any real chance for a discount here (which there's pretty clearly not), do you really think Apple would even consider dealing with an outfit like this???

If any MacNN thread ever deserved one of these: , this thread is it. Run away, as fast as you can.

The only reason scams like this keep coming up is because there are enough stupid Americans out there to fall for it.

That is as much bull **** as what comes out of Cupertino, particularily, the chart where they break down where the cost savings origionate.

Retail Price of Computer $2699.00
Reduce Price to Cost
-135.00
Memory Incentive
-400.00
Printer Incentive
-130.00
Advertising Costs
-100.00
Discounted Price
_$1934.00
Additional Money from Reseller
-150.00
Final Price $1784.00

Any retarded accountant or businessman will tell you that the reseller doesn't pay full retail for their incentives (eg., an HP printer or whatever). Now why would they discount the full retail value of a printer to applepurchaseprogram?

The reseller's cost for the incentives are at least a half, or less than that, of the retail price mentioned in the chart above THAT is the cost saving they would pass on. Less actually, since the incentive benefit to the consumer is greater, becoming even more of an incentive for the reseller to use the printer as a ploy to sell the Mac themselves. Only a freaking retard would fall for this BS.

Let me summarize in a more suscinct fasion.

Suppose reseller buys a lot of 500 printers from HP at $49 each, who's full retail value is $149 each. Now why would the reseller be so inclined to pass the cost savings of $149 to a company like apple purchase program? Its like giving them $100 simply for buying a mac! And please note that the reseller still has the printers they have to move. I'm sorry folks, but the $100 loss on the printer more than off sets sales from accessories. Now apply the same thing to the ram, and understand that advertising costs don't change in regard to volume; they are sunk costs, and do not change after the decision to advertise is made. If this thing were a quarterly income statment, they would get their ass ripped wider than the goatse guy by the SEC, the IRS... I mean, it is SO not GAAP it's not even funny.

Skip it. YEah, it sounds too good to be true. Based on the way Apple prices fly (Ed and Gov customers get roughly 5% discount) and the way they sell (volume discounts? Nope. No such thing with Apple- we buy a LOT of Macs), I'd say this is a scam to the highest degree.
Oh. Last word: According to my Apple rep- No way.

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

Hey now, I can't lock that thread, and it wasn't an anti-Canadian remark. It was good natured, friendly teasing. Living on the border, I see Canadians all the time, and go over their quite often. I even used to work for Alcan, a Canadain company! So how do you like them apples?

Seriously, I don't have anything against Canadians, I tease them just like anyone else.

Oh, and I still think this is a scam Mr. Applepurchase guy...

Yeah, I know, we've had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to keep them from crossing the border into the US. Damn Canadia and it's massive supply of canoes.
