Hello,

i recently purchased a dual 2.5 G5.

For some reason it froze on me 3 times, and every time a screen comes up and says you need to restart the computer (in different languages).

This has happened with the pre-installed OS. Since the first two freezes i updated to 10.3.8 and it still froze today.

This is some of what the log contains:

Start by running the Apple Hardware Test that came with your computer. You may have bad RAM.
ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3

Also, I'm not sure if they have fixed it yet, but are you running Azureus? It used to give dual G5s kernel panic after kernel panic.

Have you tried to do a fresh install?

Did you install *any* new software? You might have to go about this from the ground up...

Did you get the KP message while doing anything similar?

Have you installed any third party "haxies" or "helper applications"?

You should make a list here and post all the stuff you have done and added to your system. A list could help single down the issue.

Hello,

i did have ClearDock APE installed but did a bit of reading and it was suggested that i remove that so i did that 2 days ago. I haven't had a freeze since, but if it happens again i will remove all non "stock" software one by one until my last option becomes an OS re-install.

So far i've installed:
ClearDock (now removed)
MS Office
Toast 6 Titanium
EyeTv
Transmit
MPlayer OS X 2
BitTorrent
PictureScaler
Fire

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see how things go without cleardock and work from there. Fingers crossed.

Cheers

haxies for some reason can be troublesome on some machines. My bet is that's what it is... if you don't get any more KP's I would suggest emailing the maker to see if there is some reason they know of why it would not work correctly on your system. If you still get hangs you might want to see if they happen while doing the same thing on your computer.

Hello,

well i still haven't had a crash since. I'm not exactly sure why but here's the panic log: http://users.tpg.com.au/djvibez/PanicLog.html

I read that info, and it seems to have been some sort of driver issue as i can't see a manufacturer name.

Maybe some of you more experienced people can shed some light on this. Either way i'm just happy i'm not getting any problems.

Thanks

I spoke too soon

I've had another 3 kernel panics. All logs are identical, and all have happened while eyetv was running for a while.

I tried uninstalling the eyetv software, updating it...nothing seems to help. Even reset the PMU, permission repairs etc. No idea what's going on.

Could someone help?

You have defective hardware. Either ram or motherboard. The hardware test software isn't very good. Test the ram by putting one stick at a time in. If it continues to freeze, it is the motherboard.

Don't waste very much time trying to fix yourself. That's why you bought an Apple in the first place. Call up whomever you bought this G5 from and demand a refund because you didn't spend thousands of dollars for defective hardware.

Hope this helps.

You need to have the G5 running in pairs of ram.

I'd wipe and reinstall the system software.

Having said that....we had a dual 2.0 that had freezing problems..basically would freeze and the fan would start running full speed....anyway this happened from day one and 9 months later after countless attempts to fix it..its still doing it.

In this case it was clearly a hardware problem and the G5 should've been replaced...it wasn't and now we have a giant metal paper weight because the thing is useless.

If it does it with the default set up..start trying to get a new one before its too late

Well i guess i've been lucky in a way. I took out the apple supplied ram, and left only a couple of sticks of my own in there. I'm not sure why i didn't try this earlier, guess after a few software RAM tests i ruled bad RAM out. I suppose the CD Hardware Test and Memtest have their limitations.

When processor setting was set to highest, i could get my machine to KP pretty much under an hour when running EyeTv. On automatic it would take longer.

Since i've taken the RAM out i've been running EyeTv for over 48hrs straight on processor setting set to highest with no problems.

Apple have said i can take the RAM sticks to a service centre to have them replaced so looks like i can keep the G5

Cheers for all suggestions

it might be worth a try to do a NVRAM reset

hold down apple-option-o-f during boot

you'll get a Command Line Interface

type the following

reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

Your G5 will then reboot. This is almost ALWAYS worth a try... but it's a software fix...

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

I got my G5 single 1.8 in April last year. I took it in got new memory and they said it would be fine. But it wasn't. Just latly I got the Temperature monitor after refomating my computer. I found that my computer freezes when it gets around 123 F. So I was wondering if I got a liquid cooling system would that keep it below? Or should I just complain that I spent all this $ on a shitty computer?
