something more concrete than a posting on one of the usual suspect rumour sites? (not that i don't want 10.2.1!)

What time of day does Apple usually release these sorts of things? Or is it whenever?

well.. the docs were modified today (9/16)
Maybe they are just updating them as more fixes get rolled in?
Sorry for being the pessimist... It would be cool though if it came out today.

Further proof that the appetite of OS X users for a software update of any kind is insatiable. Eccentricity, boredom or a poor reflection on the OS? Or perhaps a little of all?

<anyone know why the quote buttons in IE don't work any longer?>
Addresses a potential situation in which Print Center would unexpectedly quit when using St. Claire Software's Default Folder X.
What's this? Apple fixing OS issues with small 3rd party vendors? That's nice to see.

Yeah I'd have to say both. Being new to the Mac scene, I'm always interested in the new features I'll see, as well as anxious to have Apple fix some of the f'd up performance issues I see every day. Ugh!
That having been said, I didn't see anything about QE enhancements in 10.2.1, something thinksecret had reported was seeded recently.
Anyone have ideas on that??

Nope. As I said, it wasn't a high priority, but it was a simple fix, so it made it in.
(Background: some code changes to the burning mechanism in the late 6C1xx tree broke the ability to burn ISO 9660 discs. As I said before, it wasn't important enough to push back release for. You'll be pleased to know that the minor fix made it in for 10.2.1. Directories [and subdirectories] on ISO 9660 discs now work properly on Windows.)

According to Ken Bereskin FTP in the Finder is supposed to be read only.

Hey, just teasing here.
Be happy I didn't ask about the debug code......
I am one of the people who would like to see the Finder CD-R thing fixed because it makes thing easy but Toast did the job also.
The FTP bug is of non interest to me because we didn't have it before so I don't understand why people are making such a big thing out of it now.
There are other ways to get to the same results.

Debug code!@!#!@
<insert piracy dying here>
Anyway, I'm glad the ISO 9660 issue was fixed. A lot of people will be happy. Actually, more granularity for selecting formats for CD-R/RW in the Finder will make a comeback someday too...for now, people I'm sure will be happy that hybrid discs work as they should.
The Finder FTP feature is just like SMB support in its early days. Some people would love to have non-anonymous FTP volumes mounted read/write right in the Finder; someday it'll get there. For now, it's intended for simple, read-only, anonymous use. For that, it works (almost) perfectly.

that's a crock of crap. If it was intended for that then it shouldn't prompt me for my password! What is apple doing with all my ftp passwords? sending them on to their site stealing room? In some of the earlier betas ftp worked fine to upload/download, so this functionality is mean to be included. Not to meantion if you ftp, and you click on icons they disappear. Oh and some people get kernel panics? Is that how it's supposed to be?

The feature is immature right now. Remember the initial SMB functionality? You'd get a GUARANTEED kernel panic if you mounted more than one SMB volume! And that was included in the shipping product! The FTP feature right now is IMMATURE. Yes, it is eventually meant to handle read/write. Yes, it lets you connect to password protected sites (incidentally, that's more a function of the underlying url handling and internet services than it is of Finder FTP). But not everything works right now. If it doesn't work for you in its current form, don't use it. Use another FTP client. Give feedback that you want it to work. I don't know what more I can say. It's just that everyone was acting like this was #1 on the list to be fixed in 10.2.1, and it's not on anyone's list, at all. Yes, it will eventually get handled. But if it's this important to you, GIVE FEEDBACK:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
That (or via ADC or Customer Seeding) is the ONLY WAY your concerns will be seen, and potentially addressed.

So just how is this _supposed_ to work (in theory... assuming it was working or even partially working)? should I be able to "connect to server" using a url like ftp://myserver.com and have it pop up a little mounted server onto the desktop? Do I have to include a username/password in the url, or is it also _supposed_ to pop open a little window prompting for uname/pswd?

I know you're steve job's male secretary or whatever and have all this inside information, but I have to disagree with this.
What you're saying would be fine if this were some unadvertised feature. But it isn't. It is 1/150th of the "new features" that we "paid less than a dollar apiece for."
Apple shouldn't wait for people to complain that an advertised feature is implemented half-assed at best and causes finder crashes for EVERYBODY WHO TRIES TO USE STANDARD FTP SERVERS.
And personally, I don't see how this could take all that much effort, just put a GUI on the fantastic included command line ftp client.
Apple should fix this without needing tons of people bitching at them... what're they, trying to be microsoft?
Not since windows95 have I seen,in an OS, an advertised and obvious GUI feature (remember the finder prompts you for a U/P) that causes crashes 100% of the time for everybody.

Software Update? You've got to be kidding! They even managed to break Software Update in 10.2 - no longer works from behind the firewall here!
(Along with teh rest of the Apple software that doesn't work through a firewall. Why don't they learn from their mistakes like everyone else?)

The Knowledge Base document has been pulled. I love this from www.macosrumors.com
Recon from several sources suggests that Mac OS X Update 10.2.1 will be released both as a Software Update listing and as a standalone installer download in a matter of hours.
In other words, mosr saw the knowledgebase article posted on www.macsurfer.com and that became their "Recon".

Does it accelerate the release if I press "Check Now" every 5 minutes, or can I just go to bed now?

Chris: once again: SMB was an advertized feature of 10.1, and it caused a GUARANTEED kernel panic for doing something as simple as mounting two SMB volumes. Not just sometimes, or under some circumstances, but GUARANTEED. Note that I'm not using one shoddy implementation of a feature to justify another, but for many, what SMB support there was in 10.1 was welcome. Just as for many, the FTP support in 10.2 is welcome. It works PERFECTLY FINE for anonymous FTP servers. (And as a side note, every site requiring a username/password that I've connected to, which includes various FTP servers on RedHat, Solaris, and AIX work fine, albeit read-only. It also has problems if something isn't group-readable. But, many people find this feature useful, and it works for many applications.)
Finder FTP should be improved. And I agree, implicit in most people's idea of FTP support is the ability to connect to damn near any site, anonymous or not, and be able to write to it if your permissions allow.
However, that is currently not the case.
Finder FTP is what it is right now. It's useful in that form for MANY PEOPLE. (Yes, believe it, it is.) So either use another FTP client, or give feedback. I'm not sure what else to tell you.

I, and others, connect to username/password sites every day without trouble (though they are read-only). Try wu-2.6.1-20 on RedHat 7.x as an example.

Piracy, you seem to be one of the few people in these forums who actually approach a situation with a level head, and are fair both to the user and Apple (not to mention you seem to know what you're talking about ).
Props.

If people can't figure out how to do it there might be a problem with the UI. Anyway, I can get that far too, but do you notice the striked through pencil? How can you move files onto an FTP server?
