A G4 chip really helps with fx/transition rendering for video. REALLY helps, as it can speed up the process by several times, over a G3 chip at the same frequency. I would do anything you can to get a G4 iBook if you plan on using it for Final Cut.
My opinions are my own, and not those of anybody else, including my employer.

How much are you planning on playing for the g3 ibook? Because you can get an education discount on the new g4 ibooks.

Theoretically, FCP4 requires a G4 to run, but FCP3 can run on a G3. I would say get a G4, but I don't think 700 will cut it.
400MHz PM G4 (Yikes!)
700MHz iBook G3 (16 VRAM)

well, the thing is that this ibook is from a friend, he is getting a powerbook and he is selling me his ibook, if i decide to get the g4 i have to wait at least two months more, i guess i can wait, but i would really love to have it now. is it worth the waiting?

You could buy the G3 iBook now and start saving for the G4. Then maybe in february or March you sell it and buy the G4. This way you don't have to wait, and if you are lucky you don't even lose money, when selling the G3 for about the same price you pay for it now.

Final Cut Pro 4 will not install on a G3 ibook.

(I tried without success then discovered it will only install on G4 chipped Macs.)

You can always get Final Cut Express for a G3 which is what I have on my ibook.

Oh..and get the G3 iBook if the price is right. I've had my 500 mhz ibook for 2 years now and plan on keeping it another year...I'm waiting on a G5 12" powerbook, so I know I have a bit of a wait..but my ibook is fantastic in the meantime.

How fast? That is a terrible price. People have been getting g3 900s new for that.

having a useful topic is much more useful than a load of question marks...
Also, for any FCP apps, go for G4. PowerBook is best because of the higher amount of RAM.
we don't have time to stop for gas
