I am trying to watch a movie, and within its folder it has many files with the extention ".r" + a number. There is also a .rar file, but it cannot be decompressed. It seems that the .r files have to be opened to watch the movie, but i may be wrong. Does anyone know how to open and watch this movie? The folder says it is a XViD-DVL type movie if it helps at all.
Thanks in advance!

It should be decompressed. r01 etc are parts of the segmented rar archive. Try opening the rar file in Expander and see if it asks for the following parts.

Okay, I selected all of the .r files and opened Expander, and it started to do something, but after a few minutes there was a Format Error with one of the files and it stopped. Should I try each .r file one by one .. or is there some other kind of way to do this?

Try opening only the first file, the one named *.rar, in Expander and see if it then asks for the location of *.r00.

Seconded on UnRarX... just double click the first file in the series (either .r00, .r01 or .rar) and the rest is done automagically.

Also, way to go on movie pirating , just buy the DVD .

You probably didn't download the entire movie yet that's why you get the error message when you try to unrar those files!
Start BitTorrent again and check if some bytes are still missing...
