Hi a,
Does anybody know under what conditions the ballon dialog appears in IE5? Occasionally a ballon dialog appears when a mouse is held over a picture, and shows the information from the ALT tag... however it only seems to pop up occasionally...

Anyone know how to control this?

Sometimes the page designer specifically wants it to appear.

I would like to know why it always appears when using a Windows browser and almost never with Mac browsers.

I've noticed that if you roll over an image with an alt tag before it loads at all, it will show the pop-up balloon. The moment the image starts loading, one cannot get the pop-up to reappear. Looks like a feature they were adding in that turned out buggy (what a suprise). What's extra annoying about it is that you can already read the alt tag before the image starts loading - So what's the point?!

Does the same thing with mine, too. I like this feature a lot in the PC versions of Communicator and IE, but it would be nice if they could get it right in the Mac version and not make the comment in that stupid balloon. If there's one thing in the Mac OS or 3rd party programs that I hate, it's the stupid balloon help. Why can't the Mac OS have something like, hmm... windoze? Ya know? That little yellow name thing that slides out or over from what the mouse rolls over. That's actually a good idea, only if Apple thought of it first!!

Not that this will brighten your outlook, but I believe the behavior on the Mac in this case may be a feature and not a bug. As I'm sure you probably know, the ALT tag usually means "if the viewer can't display this, show this message instead." Thus, before something is loaded and viewable, IE allows you to at least pop up the ALT message. However, after an image (or whatever) is loaded, the ALT message is deemed unnecessary. IE just needs to add a preference option so users can choose to always see ALT tags when the mouse passes over an item containing one, wouldn't you think?
