UK cost includes tax, duties, delivery and 12 month guarantee.
US cost doesn't.

Adding the VAT alone brings the UK price to 382.00

Why don't you stop blaming it on apple and start blaming it on your crappy government? It's their fault you have to pay some ridiculous "VAT", not ours.

Go take your taxes and tell the person in charge where to shove em.

They do not offer a 12month guarantee in the US ? What a joke.

Compensating for your crappy math and thread reading skills, allow me to point out that the price WITHOUT VAT still equates to US$ 702,38.

About the same as the UK.

Its Apple, not the government.

Allow me to elucidate: in general when I've been to the UK, one spends a quid like a US dollar, if a Coke is US1$, it'll be 1 Pound Sterling, or thereabouts. The actual value of the currency isn't even factored in.

When I watch "Top Gear" and they say some new car is 35,000 Sterling, it'll most likely be US$35,000 in the USA.

I certainly can't speak for any other country in Europe, their prices, currency conversions or cost of living. YMMV.

(on Windows, no idea how to make the L)

Hmmm, costs $ 698.00 here in Switzerland before Tax and $750 after tax.

As a comparison, prices of two Apple products in a number of countries (in US Dollars before tax)
Al 15" Powerbook Combo 1.33GHZ, 60GB HD:
US: $1999.00
UK: $2188.00
Germany: $2301.00
Switzerland: $2326.00
Australia: $2213.00

Ipod Photo 60GB:
US: $599
UK: $671.00
Germany: $705
Switzerland: $698.00
Australia: $637.00

So basically everyone outside the US pays more before tax, but there seems to be no rule as to how much more and while Switzerland is the most expensive here for Powerbook (It used to be cheaper than both the UK and Germany!!!, perhaps becuase the Swiss Franc has lost ground both against the Euro and the Pound) the iPod costs more in Germany and while the iPod costs less in Australia than in the UK, the Powerbook costs more than in the UK.

I would dearly know, as someone who recently bought that exact Powerbook here, how exactly Apple works these prices out. But it does show one thing, and that is that the EU is becoming more competitive than it used to be. Maybe Switzerland will finally join now.

Just another reason why Apple only sold about 5 Macs in Europe last year. That and no advertising/support/effort. Glad to see the stores starting to appear in the UK now though.

1) What Mastrap said.

2) Multinational corporations have to deal with currency fluctuations. Yes, it's been the US dollar declining for two years now, but for years before that, it was other currencies falling against the US dollar. Apple, like many, many businesses, decided to shift the risk of currency fluctuations to its customers. Hence, the higher prices outside of the US.

Apple does make adjustments to its prices due to major currency changes (Apple Canada's prices came down in 2003 due to a 20% appreciation of the Canadian dollar that year), and if the US dollar continues to weaken, I'm sure you'll see prices outside of the US come down. It'll probably take quite a while and a large currency shift, as the current pricing regime is most likely ingrained, but it'll happen.

If it doesn't, complain to Steve.

That still doesn't explain the inconsistency in prices between products though. Why does the iPod cost more in Germany than in Switzerland, but a Powerbook more in Switzerland than in Germany.

Something is very wrong there.

********, things don't cost more in America, that's overseas. God, Americans always think they are the only civil country on earth (if that's what you could possibly refer to them as).
