I had jaguar running fine on my 1ghz tibook (2 512mb sticks of kingston ram), then i upgraded to panther and now its very sluggish and hangs all the time. I put in the Install Disk 1 to try and do a format/install of panther, but preview crashed when trying to read the install pdf file and running the "install OSX" did nothing.

i'm not sure what's going on, so I just want to do a format/install. I tried restarting and holding down the C key(i thought that would get me to the OSX install cd that's in my drive), but it just brought up a white screen with small black text in the top right of the screen, with a message about "Decrementer exception at $SRR0: 00...blah" and a prompt:

"TO continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return. To shut down...."

ok

eh, how can I format and install panther? And if that's not stable (perhaps because of my memory, i guess i'll just install jaguar). Either way, please let me know how to format and install from the cd. Thanks!

Sounds like you have big problems if you got that Open Firmware prompt when you tried to boot from the CD. Try wiping your PRAM (hold command+shift+P+R at startup until you hear the startup noise again) and then try booting from the CD again. That "Install OS X" thing on the CD should have rebooted your computer, but either you didn't let it or things were too messed up for it to work right. But you still should have been able to boot from the CD by holding C at startup. Interesting.

ehm i held command+shift+p+r and it got a kernel panic

EDit: panic'ed twice in a row now.. what the heck is going on!? i've NEVER seen a panic before

Edit: Well, now I can boot to the panther cd... lets see how the install goes, hehe

Do I want to format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or as "UNIX File System"?

UNIX sounds better, but i'm not sure.

Good. You must have had one terribly corrupted system.
