Hi, I know this is in the wrong forum and I'm sorry, but I was pretty sure I would get way more responses here.
And this was supposed to be a poll, but instead, just post.

Right now it's neither, but I will probably get a Dell whenever I can afford one for the Macbook Pro that I also cannot afford at the moment. Not as aesthetically pleasing, but as mduell notes the stand seems better, the actual monitor seems just as good, and the price simply can't be beat.

You can't beat the prices that Dell offers. Plus more inputs. I'd go with a Dell. Sorry, Apple.

If money is no object, Barco.
If money is an object but you're willing to part with a lot of it, Eizo or La Cie
If money is an object and you're not willing to part with a lot of it but still want something big and good, Dell.
If you want something that matches an Apple computer, Apple.

Dell here too. Got my 24" hooked up to Mac Pro and XBox 360 with great results from both. Would consider getting a 20" to go with it if I had any more desk space.

LaCie does it for me -- 19" CRT is currently around 4.5 years old and it still looks and performs great!

I love my Dell 2407WFP! It was much cheaper and looks almost as sexy -- the aluminum highlights match the G5 well. I don't have many uses for the multiple inputs, but I do use the card reader.

If you compare the Apple 30" vs. the Dell 30", I'd go with the Apple all the way. It's a much better quality, built at a much better standard. Dell's manufacturing stds. are horrible compared to Apple. Everything is plastic and built at a lower manufacturers std.

Right there. Then I would add the Nec SpectraView Reference, but it is insanely expensive. So if your work is aimed to everything colour, something like a LaCie 321 would be a great choice.

Which panel manufacturer does Apple use for the 30"? And Dell?
Which ODM does Apple use for the 30"? And Dell?

From what I remember they both use the same OEM manufacturer. If the Apple is such good quality, why the 1 year warranty? If ANY company advertises as quality they need to stand behind their product and prove it, especially if you are charging $500 more. Thats just my opinion.

The 20s used the same panel at one point (Dell 2005FPW and Apple 20" at the time), but I haven't seen confirmation that the 30s do. It wouldn't surprise me, but I wouldn't claim it without seeing a teardown.

If you're purchasing a cinema, chances are it's with a tower, in which case the towers AppleCare automatically covers the cinema for three years. And who here wouldn't get AppleCare on a Mac Tower+Cinema??
As far as screens go, we have almost completely switched over to an on screen proofing workflow. We use cinemas, our clients use cinemas, and most importantly our printers use cinemas (or Lacie LCDs).

The specs are pretty much the same. The response time is different so prob not exactly the same one. The Dell might be a newer one since its faster and did come out later. I'm just saying for the money with them being so close in 'visual' quality, the extras you get for the price, including the warranty... I wouldn't recommend an ACD 30 to anyone.

I don't think you understand, the specs might be similar, but the specifications and restrictions that Apple demands from the manufacturer are much higher than the ones Dell requires. Apple has tighter tolerances, Dell will accept lesser quality and then you get to put up with horrible Dell (foreign) tech support.
It's real simple, if Dell was worth a piece of crap, they wouldn't have the mountan of horrible tech support.
There is one other brand that I like and use and that is NEC.

Actually, most people I know don't buy a new display with a new computer. And Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 3 year warranty if you're buying just a display.

Do you have any proof of this?
I know SJobs made a claim at a keynote that they reject displays others would accept, but I haven't seen any data to back that up.

Actually they do, its $100. The Apple Store (U.S.) - AppleCare Protection Plan for Apple Display
What is misleading, is you are really getting a 2 year warranty. They INCLUDE the one year you already get as one of the years.

I would go the dell route. Apple monitors are overpriced for what they are. They are nice to look at but I would rather have more functionality over looks.

Dell, cause it's cheaper, more ports, and the stand. But it looks like crap compared to the Apple displays.

Neither at the moment. If the 20" Cinemas come down in price a bit, then I'll consider one of those. If not, then I'm thinking about a 20" Dell in the relatively near future.

As far as getting 2 year Applecare labeled as 3 year? Yeah is has always been that way. They will always tell you 3 years and it's assumed its 3 years in addition to the year you already get, because thats how normal extended warranties work... except at Apple.

not to hijack, but interms of hooking a xb360 to a monitor, the VGA on the Dell wouldn't support HD. how would you connect the xb360 to a monitor and keep the 1080i? im thinking about whether to get a monitor or an LCD tv for when i go away next year and if i can get a monitor and have it run full HD, its much cheaper than the same size LCD tv...
thx adam

Why won't VGA work for 1920x600@60Hz? But if it won't, you can use the component inputs.

thats what im saying. in order to get an HD quality picture on a 360, dont u need to use component cables? reason being, is because the Dell only has a VGA in, no component.
The 360 will only spit out 1080i if it uses its component cables.

Depends on which Dell monitor you get. The 24" and up models have Component, Composite, DVI, and VGA.

Also, the Xbox can output several resolutions over VGA, including 1080p, which works just fine on a Dell 2407.

After a LCD monitor shootout conducted at home I'm now looking at three Gateway LCD monitors. A pair of 22" and one 24" display. Honestly, Apple's displays are easier on the eyes than Samsung, Dell, Spectre and Gateway but I couldn't justify the extra expense for Apple branded displays. The big problem: all the new displays are too bright and have no provision to reduce the brightness without crushing the blacks throwing color accuracy out the window. Apple's displays are not as bright and therefore easier to look at.

Of course. Get the $40 VGA cable and you can output most standard (Even 4:3) resolutions.
