I just got a Sawtooth G4 450 60GB 768MB RAM for a whopping 20 bucks at a college asset sale I was wondering what MacOS or Linux OS I could put on there to have a halfway decent system.
Ive got MacOS 10.4 Tiger CD Version around and Panther along with jaguar
I have a 19" Gateway VX900 Monitor on the Stock 16MB Video card
Right now the system is running MacOS 9.2.2 decently

I'd say stop at 10.3 Panther. It's a bit faster than Tiger on lower end systems because it isn't as bloated with things like Dashboard and Spotlight. But, visually and functionally, 10.3 and 10.4 are pretty much identical.
I'd recommend upgrading the graphics card to something beefier regardless of what you end up doing. OS X puts a lot of the system load on the graphics card so long as it's either a Radeon or a GeForce series card.

I'm running 10.4.6 on my 400 Sawtooth, with a 128mb Radeon 9200 and 768mb ram. Works well for me.

Latest and greatest. I've sawtooth-era machines at work with both 10.4 and 10.3, and they feel about equal to me.
Just throw RAM at it. And perhaps the aforementioned video card.

If you have spare $100 or so, drop in a 2nd hand CPU upgrade and OS X will fly.

Get a better AGP video card, and 10.3 or 10.4 will do just fine.
