They have the Internet on computers, now?. Yeah, Homer is going to love this non sense.

from the NY Times:

While Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are busy building legions of data centers to capture the contents of the Web, a fledgling company has decided that it will squeeze the essential Internet onto a single laptop.

The company, Webaroo, plans to announce Monday that Acer, a leading maker of personal computers, will begin selling laptops furnished with 40 gigabytes of data, representing a snapshot of the Web.

While the full Internet is a million gigabytes or larger, Webaroo's founders argue that they have created a way to provide offline Web searchers with a useful subset of the Internet's vast storehouse of data and knowledge.

"People are addicted to search," said Brad Husick, Webaroo's president and one of its founders, and "there are lots of times when Internet access is inconvenient."

The Webaroo designers note that most Web searchers never make it farther than the first page or two of results from a typical query.

"There is a lot of junk and a lot of redundancy on the Web," said Rakesh Mathur, the chief executive and a founder of Webaroo. Even so, the company said, its system would strive to deliver sites intact, including their ads, to avoid the frustration of dead ends.

In addition to offering subsets of relatively permanent Internet information, the system will update itself when the laptop is connected to the Internet, so that the user can use Webaroo to capture recent information from a Web site that changes frequently, like a news site, for later viewing offline.

So… why is my internet going like c**p ?. Well, just updating 40 GB of data…

40GB is not enough space to fit all the porn on the Internet.

I can imagine it having quite an appeal in certain applications or for certain consumers in certain locations or certain circumstances.
America should know the political orientation of government officials who might be in a position to adversely influence the future of this country. http://tinyurl.com/4vucu5

Acer, a leading maker of personal computers
I don't think I have seen an Acer in YEARS.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

I was sitting at an Acer laptop yesterday.

Pretty okay, but for having the exact same screen size as my 15" Powerbook, the damn think is ****in' HUGE!

Let's face it - any useful generic consumer information on the Internet could probably fit into 40 Gb. Stuff like Wiki, IMDB, AllMusic, etc..

Of course, you'd still have to connect if you want to read what 18-year-old student Tammy from Wyoming had for breakfast yesterday and her thoughts on the latest episode of Lost.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.
