Doesn't really matter - the drives are bad either way and should not be trusted - but yes, I think it is the controllers or a bug in their firmware. I do not believe that they have millions of bad cells. There aren't too many foundries that make flash, and I don't think any of them would let shitty stuff like this onto the market.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
