This on anyones radar?
(Dakar, i know your a Rockstar fanboy, as am I)
I've read a few previews, and looks like it could be a "sleeper" hit.

It seems everyone is saying its GTA: Wild West...
seems to me its more involved something like
Fallout: 1866

Red Dead Multi
Has the aspects of a winner, time will tell.

The reviews are coming in...
1up - A
GamePro - 5/5
IGN - 9.7
IGN UK - 9.8
Game Informer - 9.8
Computer and Video Games - 9.5

The consensus is great, and the reviews i've watched/read all reiterate what i said earlier, its more Fallout/Oblivion than GTA: Wild West but awesome non the less.

I did a pre-order yesterday on Amazon (20$ gift card offer) plus free shipping.

Anyone else on the fence? It looks like the multiplayer is MUCH improved over GTA IV and could actually have a sustainable experience.

EDIT: just checked and Amazon is still offering the 20$ Gift Card if you pre-order today (release is tomorrow)

Ug, I am thinking about buying another game, but have been toying with Undisputed 2010 (even though you bastards don't play them).

This has the makings of a classic but I just cannot stand 3rd person games.

I'm in love with this game. I fell asleep on the couch with the controller in my hands last night. I spent about 75% of the time just roaming the countryside and trying to maintain my honorable reputation (I played through inFamous first as a bad guy, so I'm reversing my approach in RDR).

It's so much fun riding, shooting, skinning, and bounty hunting that I can see myself being lost in this game for months, and I haven't even tapped into the multiplayer yet. Three of my friends picked the game up yesterday, and we're going to posse up sometime next week after we've already plowed through some of the single player.

This one might be worth giving it a shot. Why the distaste for 3rd person? Camera management?

I don't know why more games don't do what Fallout 3 did, and simply have a button you can push to switch from 3rd to 1st person. You could even adjust the distance of the camera in 3rd person. It was perfect. Some situations really called for 1st person (like tight closed in areas), while 3rd person was awesome for running around the open areas - allowing for a wider view of the land.

Is that patented or something?

My guess is it requires good, time consuming programing.

Remember back in PS1 days when every game had customizable controls?

Looks freaking sweet (multiplayer), I'm gonna pick it up. Don't expect to waste any time on single player though.

The animation looks smooth, the graphics are quite stunning, but I can't get over the feeling that it still lacks, the fluidity of a good FPS. GTA IVs multi was fun... but its hard not to constantly feel like its not as responsive or easy to use as a FPS, which becomes frustrating after a while.

If I feel like a good FPS, I'll play MW2. This'll be a nice change of pace/gameplay.

I'm not saying I want an FPS. I'm saying I want smooth gameplay/controls. GTA IV didn't offer that.

I see what you're saying. The gameplay video seemed to show pretty fluid aiming, but it's hard to say without playing it. I'll give it a run through before I buy it.

It didn't look that different from GTA.

Obviously there's no way for me to definitively find out.

I'll say this, no GTA game (or really any rockstar game) has ever had decent controls IMO. Fun games, yes, but piss poor controls.

This touches on it a little bit...

The movement controls are basically a combination of GTA IV and Uncharted

Rockstar San Diego listened to our complaints. You don't have to deal with the annoying clunky controls like in GTA IV while you are in combat. When your gun is drawn, you can jog by holding the left stick all the way forward like any other 3rd person shooter. Making the shooting element fast paced. When your weapon is concealed,(Tap L1) you go into casual mode and you walk in a normal speed like in GTA IV when you hold the left stick forward. (For those who want realistic elements)

You know, open world games appeal to me quite a bit...this might be a nice RPG-ish gap filler before Vegas in the Fall. If your link is right, kavvika, and they have fixed the clunky-assed GTA controls then I might be getting interested here.

Hmmmmm....

It looks tempting (the Dastardly video was hilarious), but I just finished Assassin's Creed 2 and I have Bioshock 2 and Mas Effect 2 on the shelf to play. Crackdown 2 and Halo Reach are coming soon. So I'll probably pass, unless I find an empty couple of months.

I'm trying to decide if the multi-player is reason enough to get this, because I have no desire to play the single-player.

Why the hate for single player? Personally, I get bored of multiplayer shooters fast.

MetaCritic - Inside the reviews

Semi interesting facts -

97% of scores > 9/10 - Xbox 360
96% of scores > 9/10 - PS3

Xbox 360 Best game of 2009
MW2 - MetaScore - 94

RDR - MetaScore - 95

Multiplayer Quotes
The reason to keep coming back to Red Dead Redemption for months and months is called Free Roam. … Free Roam by itself is meaty enough to be an entirely separate game and it would still be awesome. –IGN

With 50 levels and unlockable character skins, mounts, and titles, the multiplayer is a fully featured complement to the excellent single-player experience. –GameInformer

While it’s true that GTA IV offered a much wider range of modes than Redemption does, it’s also true to say that the modes in Redemption have been solidly crafted and the feathered aiming system is more complimentary to the multiplayer experience than GTA IV’s.

I think the multi is mostly an add on for open world sandbox games but RDR could attempt to change that.

now co-op on the other hand...

Well, this thread has certainly piqued my interest, but just watching the Dastardly video is enough to make me feel I'm not too off-base with my concerns. All those subtle pauses as actions are performed... Perfect example: At the end of the video when he goes to remove the nun off the horse he jumps; I assume those controls are both mapped to the same button.

(Its hard to believe that 25 years ago 2 buttons was fine, but now we have 10 which have to mapped with multiple functions).

Fixed. Never. Too much room for improvement. Better? Okay. That's believable.

Is it true co-op? Friends can just pop in and out of your game without issue and help with missions?

Basically, if it ain't Borderlands quality, its iffy.

I noticed that too, my major gripe with GTA games is also that there are WAAAAY to many functions mapped poorly. Not to beat a dead horse here, but Valve games allow you to map any function to any button, you want fire to be click the right thumbstick? You got it!

Being interested is still a ways off from buying of course. Other games that I was interested in include Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, ODST, L4D2...

I recently got Darksiders, since BioShock 2 was lonely. So I think I'll be willing to give this a chance down the line when its cheaper and I have more time.

I don't see much in the way of gaming once New Vegas comes out, maybe I'll play a multi game on the side, probably MW2, but I will not have extra time for another single player game.

Of course it's not like we need to coordinate games or anything.

I know, it's been so long I forgot where my Borderlands disc was. I'm down for a DLC weekend any time. I heard Max Moxxi was terrible so we should focus on General Knoxx and Zombie Island.

Darksiders was fun but I got bored... quick, i had higher expectations with all the Zelda references.

I'm prepared to get back into Bioshock 2 multi if either of you goons got on that train, but i still think Bioshock 2 is a worthwhile pick up either way.

I don't doubt it's good. It's just I was hard on the open-world cock, but GTA IV (not a bad game per se) was enough to derail that.

Yeah, I tried to cross a river last night. Surprise!

I do have to say that I feel my love for westerns is probably playing a part in my love affair with RDR. If you hate westerns, I'm not sure you're going to get much out of this game. You probably need to at least like them.

Also from GTA III, if you roll the horse over, after a few seconds flames start to flare up and then it explodes.

Heheh.

I don't much care for westerns, but i like the idea of spending days trekking through the wild west with a trusty revolver and sleeping under the stars.

I'll wait for a Kevin Bogues impression first, we both adore F3, so if he says I'll enjoy it in the same vein as F3 I might be sold.

Not in RDR. Ankle-deep water results in instant death.

Guess that's shoots my supposedly obvious theory down. I guess you don't have to grow up watching The Sacketts to be in love with the idea of a western game.

On that note, shooting buzzards down in-game is oddly addictive.
