I have a program in Windows that is called Textpad that, along with the Java SDK, allows me to compile and run Java programs.

I am looking for something that will do the exact same thing in OS X. I have tried eclipse and must be doing something wrong because I cannot figure out how to compile or run anything. Thanks for an information!

To run stuff in Eclipse you can control click on the files in left hand pane and from there you should be able to run them from there. You might also want to check out NetBeans which I prefer (but then I used to work for Sun so i'm biased).

That said you should get familiar with the way javac works along with the CLASSPATH stuff since all of these IDEs including TextPad use all this stuff underneath and its worth knowing how it all works.
