Apologies if this has been discussed before but I can't find it.

Although my PowerMac (running Mac Server OS 10.5.5) is backing up to a RAID 5 NAS I thought that I would also attach a 500GB Time Machine drive as we keep client files on it and if someone overwrites one then TM's quasi-versioning gets us out of trouble.

But - the PowerMac is headless and when I went to it via Screen Sharing to use TM I noticed that the TM app launches (the windows shift a little and all becomes unresponsive) but the TM GUI doesn't launch and so it is completely ineffective!

Does anyone know of a way round this? Or how to get the TM GUI to come up via VNC?

All help greatly appreciated.

The TM file restore GUI worked fine for me with non-headless 10.5 desktop over VNC using the included VNC server. Do you have multiple displays configured on your server? Perhaps it's coming up on a different display than you're seeing over VNC.

if you aren't too fussed about using the glitzy interface then you can always use the good ol' fashioned file system in

/Volumes/<time machine volume>/backups.db/

just follow your nose in there, its pretty straight forward to navigate...
