Good luck with that project. I've heard that two of the happiest days of a guys life is the day he buys a boat, and the day he sells it.

Cue reference to "I'm on a BOAT!"

That does look like a very nice vessel there, Rob. It looks fast (which I assume is one of your motivations to get it). Waiting for "action shots" of the boat making everyone around feel jealous.

it may be a long wait for the action shots; doesn't look ready to run...yet.

I'm just waiting to hear why this is the most badass boat possible, and no one even knows it. And it has all of these awesome badass features that no one would realize unless they were as educated, rational, and badass as Rob.

And if anyone was thinking about getting a boat that's the one they should get.

I don't see a live well or a trolling motor. It's going to need a good deal of work to be worth fishing with.

Alright.... well, I had a lot of fun boating last year, and considering I'm working in Madison almost every day, I'm thinking about getting another summer toy. Started snooping around, found nothing cool or interesting, mostly trihull boring crap. So I threw an ad on CL, looking for a "cool" boat, and got a short description of this thing. Asked for pictures, liked it, and went to see it. Turns out I know the guy selling it; went to HS with his son and daughter. Weird. Anyway...

boat is a 78 Sleekcraft Aristocrat. Really high end boat, well made. No core at all, solid fiberglass hull. Transom is solid. Floor is soft, but that's only in the middle, because this thing is a DUAL tunnel hull. Two tunnels run the length of the boat, compress the air for a better ride, and help the boat lift out of the water for faster speeds. Powered by a generic 350 SBC, but ... problem is the stern drive is an alpha one. These blow up with anything over 300hp. To make it fast, I'd need to upgrade to a bravo one, which is like 3 grand. Really looks fantastic though, so I think I'm going to fix it up and drive around as is, just try not to beat on it much. Should be pretty awesome looking when finished.

Definitely true. They're huge money pits. Even my little runabout, which originally cost me $100... well... I've spent ~ 600-700 getting it ready, and it still has issues. I guess I'd rather just get something awesome, that I don't mind putting money into.

Thanks! I am looking forward to this. My budget is around 3 grand, I'm hoping it'll be worth more like 6-9k when I'm done working on it.

An Oceanco is a really high end boat. What you have there isn't even an Aquarama.

i'm a Carver fan myself; practical touring yachts that "normal" people can afford. (not to be confused with Bob Carver's high end audio gear, which i'm also a fan of).

I don't know much about boats. Is this one good enough for large open lakes? Growing up my family had a ski boat and it was always a lot of fun to get out on the lake and cruise around or just float quietly. Never was much for water skiing, snow skiing was much more fun.

It's a lake boat. Thanks to the tunnel design it'll handle medium chop pretty nicely, but it's not an offshore boat. Those are Deep-Vs, to cut through larger waves. This one will just look cool... and I don't really have the bug for speed, so I'll probably keep the 350. I guess some guy on the boat forums had one with a blown 454, and he could hit a GPS verified 92mph, said it was a fantastic, stable platform.... so... we'll see what happens. I'll be happy if it hits 45mph, honestly.

It's kind of amazing-you don't notice that the original colors are so....well "late '70s" until you see the picture with new colors. I think your plan makes the boat look a lot better.
