Part of the latest redesign of my site, is that I want to make a very simplified version of it, using very old code, that I can send old browsers to. I already have an 'old browser' page now that simply tells you your browser is too old, and that you must upgrade to view the site. I'm just going to expand this page a little bit, integrate a tool or two, and call it a day. But it's all going to be HTML4, no (or very limited) CSS. It will work on old versions of IE, Safari, FF, I'm hoping I can get it to work even in super old Netscape browsers. I can be the one website you can go to after a fresh installation of Mac OS 8.1
So I need a good subdomain. I want it to be a little funny, but also drive the point home. Here's a few I came up with so far. I'm leaning towards "obsolete" at this point.
- old.whatsmyip.org
- ancient.whatsmyip.org
- dinosaurs.whatsmyip.org
- relics.whatsmyip.org
- outdated.whatsmyip.org
- obsolete.whatsmyip.org
What do you think? Got another one you want to suggest?

Don't forget to include auto-start .mid music, <blink> code and obligatory Netscape Now badge!

I am literally going to do none of that.
Here is my current "browser upgrade" page, written in validated HTML 4.01 transitional
WhatsMyIP.org | Upgrade Your Browser
It looks great in FF2 and IE6. "Great" meaning, no rendering defects. I'll have to dig out my PMac 7300 to see how the page renders in extra old browsers.

I think "vintage" is the term Apple uses when they want to be cute.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Hmmmm. 'vintage' is good, but I want to be slightly more dick-ish than 'vintage', so I'm still leaning towards 'obsolete'

The user numbers for old browsers are so insignificant these days that, IMO, they are not worth bothering about.
If you really want to bother, just use this little tool: http://browser-update.org/

And no, don't block older browsers. You don't know what sort of garbage might be installed on machines that can not be updated. We had a machine in the measurement room running NT 4.0 until a couple of years ago.
