Ferry carrying 1 400 disappears

Salah Nasrawi | Cairo, Egypt

http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx..._news__africa/

03 February 2006 01:10

An Egyptian ferry with about 1 400 people on board has disappeared from radar screens in the Red Sea off the Saudi coast, Egyptian maritime officials said on Friday.

Helicopters have spotted bodies floating on the sea and one lifeboat carrying three people in the vicinity of where the ship, the El-Salaam 98, was last seen on radar screens, the maritime officials said.

Maritime sources said at least 1 310 Egyptians were on board, as well as around 100 people from other countries, including Sudanese and Saudi nationals.

It's a conspiracy. This is a CIA / NSA ship, no operating in stealth mode. Next stop: the moon.

What's pathetic is they requested the British navy to sent help (2 days away) but utterly rejected the assistance from the Israeli navy (2 minutes).

What's pathetic about that ?

In a world of suicide bombers, this makes perfect sense

I heard about this tragedy on the radio new this morning. Very tragic. My prayers go out to the victims, families, and friends.

I agree it's pathetic that help that might have been so nearby and might have helped save ?? lives was refused. It's truly sad.

It does make perfect sense that you wouldn't accept help from your mortal enemy except that the two nations signed a peace treaty.

But you can't legislate people's feelings.

And, I think it's probably for the best because this way the Israelis can't EASILY be blamed for doing anything to harm the rescue or be suspected of sabotage in some way.

It's sad.

I blame Canada. Clearly they're up to something.

Leave civilians out of disputes. People just want to live their lives.

It is pathetic that they would do that. Why would you not want to help people as quickly as possible? Besides why would the Israeli's want to bomb an already sunken ship? It's just the muslim hatred of all things Israeli/jewish that probably made this terrible disater worse.

Well, not to speak for the other posters, but to be totally fair, this happened in the Red Sea. Where IS that? They speak Arabic. Who here speaks Arabic? They are primarily from Egypt. There's a strong sentiment amongst many that any country that is against Israel is not our ally. There were reports that they refused help from Israel.

Actually, you COULD commend our posters for NOT coming on here saying that they got what they deserved or something heartless and insensitive like that. Or blaming the Capt. for NOT turning around when he was still near the embarkation point and the fire broke out.

I don't know that anyone is really thinking in terms of skin color.

Except you.

I listed several possibilities. You insist that there be ONE. And a damning one at that!

The captain and crew should be the last leaving.
and skin colour has nothing to do with cowardice.

addenda to the Red Sea zone:
They are many strategic military bases around there, Suez,Sinaï, upto Arabia. Russians react the same way (submarine event) so would any nation with strategic areas to protect.

It is sad that they hate so much the Israeli that they refused their help. It is pathetic.

I hope some crazy extremists died, not just law abiding, peaceful and honest people died which would be a great tragedy and lost.
