I didn't think it had the telephony support - just vioce chat in iChat, and/or linking your bluetooth phone to the address book (using the computer to dial the bluetooth phone).

Alas the modems built in to macs cannot do voice.

You'll need extra hardware like Parliant's thing. Google for Parliant - you should find it.

You can Nikotel4Mac from www.nikotel.com to do VoIP telephony. The rates from Japan to the rest of the world are about 4 cents a minute which beats NTT, etc. The software is a bit flakey (occasional freezes when quitting application) at times under OS X 10.3.2 but the voice quality is quite good over an optical connection at my end to a POTS in the UK for example.
I wish there were more VoIP applications for Mac to POTS but this seems an unpopular area for OS X developers at present--no ideas why though.

I've been looking long and hard at http://www.ovolab.com/phlink/

I've been wanting to automate my house with a few things, and I think this would be the first step...

Phlink is cool - my brother has one - but it (currently) does not allow you to have a conversation through it.

Ahh - makes me reminiscent about the GeoPort.

My 6400 had MegaPhone...

At the time... and to this day... it was/is an amazing application...

But like others have said, it didn't go anywhere...

The other option is to use software from xten.com. It can be used with a variety ip phone services including nikotel, iconnecthere, addaline, and terracall.

Has anyone actually tried any internet telephony yet? Particularly in the UK. I often make calls to Australia, Japan, and the US for friends and family.

Is this the best software?

What are the best (cheapest) providers for this?

Thanks in advance,

There are a handful of service providers in the US and one in the UK that I know of. In the US there is iConnectHere, TerraCall, Mac2phone (Nikotel), and Addaline. In the UK there is SIPcall. The US companies offer cheaper rates worldwide, even for calls to the UK. The other nice thing for you about the US companies, is that with iConnectHere and Mac2phone, you can get a US phone number (about $9 per month for this), and your US friends can make a local call which will be routed back to your computer in the UK.
